Halton Region is holding its first E-Waste Amnesty Week to allow residents to drop off electronic waste (e-waste) free of charge, this week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton. Acceptable e-waste items include computers, com- puter monitors, computer peripherals (keyboards, mice, scanners, speakers, printers, etc.), televisions, VCRs, DVD players, remote con- trols, stereos, speakers, answering machines and MP3 players. The E-Waste amnesty Week is a great opportunity for Halton residents to get rid of electronics that are no lon- ger in working condition and ensure they are recycled, said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. E-Waste (exclud- ing computer monitors and televisions) is accepted all year at the HWMSs Con- tainer station for a small fee. Discarded electronic waste is accumulating at an alarming rate worldwide. According to Envirnmental Canada, Canadians threw out an estimated 167,000 tonnes of E-waste in 2002. This amount is expected to increase to about 206,000 tonnes by 2010. E-waste collected from industrial, commercial or institutional settings cannot be accepted free of charge during E-Waste Amnesty Week. Electronic waste drop-off Pelitis family arrives from Greece with special dream Achilles Mazda circa 1985 Celebrating 30 years Pelitis family arrived from Greece with a special dream By Matthew Reid and Angela Tyler Achilles Pelitis Sr. and his wife Litsa, arrived in Canada, immigrants from Greece, in 1971. Achilles (Les) was a mechanic, and the couple lived in Toronto for a few months As Litsa says, Les always knew what he wanted. Les was an excellent mechanic, but his dream was to own a car dealership. For someone new to Canada and with few pos- sessions, it could have been an unreachable goal. For the Pelitis family, it was a dream. This month they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their dream. Two months in what Litsa calls the big city, the cou- ple decided it was not for them and moved to Acton with the help of a local com- pany that employed Les as a mechanic. Acton, for the Pelitis was home. Weve loved it here from day one, said Litsa. Les told his employer that he had bigger plans than be- ing an employee. He forcast that soon he would own his own business. In 1973, Les and Litsa bought the B.P. gas station at the corner of Church and Queen Streets in Acton. The Pelitis pumped gas, repaired cars, operated a lunch counter, did towing and more. Any beginning is hard. What we lacked in knowledge we made up with hard work, Said Litsa. We sometimes found we were working 24 hours a day just to keep up. In 1977, hard work, long hours and perseverance paid off. Les and Litsa, owners of Achilles Motors had also become the owners of Achilles Mazda. Again, some may have thought the Pelitis had a taken on another daunting task with opening a new car dealer- ship in Acton, which at the time was approximately 6,000 people. For Les, it was just another opportu- nity for success. Still at the same Queen Street location, although renovated over the years, Achilles Mazda is celebrat- ing its 30th anniversary. Although Achilles Sr. is not as hands on as he was as a result of health issues, he is confident that the reigns are in good hands with son Achilles Jr. at the helm, and Litsa. Les always respected the customer. We taught our son to do the same. We are happy and proud he has followed in our footsteps and taken our lead, says Litsa. An open house and cel- ebration will be held on November 21 in the sales de- partment with an appearance from the President of Mazda. Achilles Pelitis Jr., will be accepting a 30th anniversary memento from him. Achilles Jr., says there is no secret why Achilles Mazda has been around so long. Taking care of custom- ers and taking care of their employees is how they have managed to stay in business throughout the years. An- other key reason Achilles has thrived is that word of mouth travels very quickly, he says We know, that when at the end of the day, we can look someone in the eye and say we did a good job, says Pelitis Jr. Thats how we stay in business, Achilles Pelitis, his wife Litsa and son Achilles Jr. in 1977 at their new Mazda dealership
