THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2007 17THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 200716 by Mark Lockyer The Acton Fire Fighters Bantam BB Tanners have been on a major run taking 7 of 8 points to bring themselves back to .500 hockey in the always tough Smith A Division. On October 28 they travelled to Hespeler to take on the to answer to a previous 5-2 loss. The first period ended 0-0 with Mitchell Christopher making some spectacular saves. The second period continued with end to end rushes and the Shamrocks striking first. Less than a minute later John White drove home a rebound from the stick of Adam Duval to tie it up. Nick Eagan would score the final tally at the six minute mark of the third period, wiring the puck to the top corner with the assists credited to the work of Aaron and Troy Weaver. Final score 2-1. Storm stymied On October 29th the boys stepped it up a notch hosting the Guelph Storm and winning 9-2. The BBs buried the puck nine straight times before allowing the Storm to enter on the equation frustrating them at every turn. The first period was highlighted with goals by Cameron Carr (2), Mitchell Brake and Jake Lewis; Assists awarded to Nick Ea- gan, Mitchell Brake, Aaron Weaver, Chris Azzopardi, and John White. The second period goals came from the hands of Nick Eagan and Jake Lewis with the assists being awarded to Travis Brown, Jake Lewis and Chris Azzopardi. Mitchell Brake, Adam Duval and Nick Eagan rounded out the third period with the assists being awarded to Jesse Spurrell (2). Colton Wiens expertly handled the Goaltending duties, standing on his head, making key saves that sparked the onslaught. Burlington baffled On November 5 a strong team from Burl- ington came through the door, with an over abundance of confidence, after our previous encounter that saw the BB Tanners drop a 4-1 decision. They had no idea that there was a well disciplined play-making team awaiting them. Mitchell Christopher turned away 34 hard shots throughout the game! The team defence did an outstanding job steering the would-be snipers to the outside with the offence back checking diligently. Acton would strike first at the eight-minute mark of the second period scored by Troy Weaver with the assist being awarded to Adam Duval. That goal would stand until the final four minutes of the game when Acton got caught on a 4 man break out at mid ice. Final score 1-1. On November 11th the Bantams found themselves back in Burlington for the third meeting of the season. The boys came ready to play skating from whistle to whistle both ways. As the game progressed you could see the confidence build in their playmaking and defensive skills. The first period ended in a 0-0 tie. Burling- ton struck quickly in the second frame only to have Acton tie it up one minute later on a marker by Mitchell Brake assisted by John White. Burlington struck again with two min- utes left in the second frame to make it 2-1. After a brief pep rally in front of the bench to start the third, it took only 32 seconds, after some nifty dangling by Jesse Spurrell, to find an open Troy Weaver parked in front of the net, who, put the puck by the sprawling net minder to tie it up again. Three and a half minutes later Nick Eagan took a pass from Adam Duval in the neutral zone found his speed going down the right wing cut to the middle and let a blistering shot go to the top right corner to seal the win. Final score 3-2. The Bantam Tanners home games are played every Monday at 9 p.m. Bantam BB Tanners climb back on ladder Acton Tanners (St. Lawrence Cement) Midget team was pitted against Fergus for another wild league game on Tuesday, Nov 6. The Tanners edged Fergus 6-5 with goalie Joey Dreler starring. Fergus arrived at the Acton arena ready for trouble. It was a typical match between the two rivals with Acton skating around the Fergus players while Fergus tried to mix things up with the Tanners. At 13:01 of opening period, Jessy Kuenzig, took a feed from Adam Amato and Dylan Creasey to put one past the Fergus netminder. Mark Wells got into the action with help from Adam Amato and Josh McDonell at 6:48 for the second Tanner goal. Dylan Creaseys hot stick put away the third goal for Acton, unassisted, 20 seconds later at 6:28! Game chippier The second period saw the game getting a bit chippier as the Fergus squad fell further behind. Jessy Kuenzig, assisted by Adam Amato at 6:25, flew his second goal of the game past a frustrated Fergus netminder. Less than three minutes later at 3:36, Adam Amato put one of his own in the net with help from the skilled sticks of Josh McDonell and Jordan Duin. After the flood, the Tanners came out ready to play more hockey, scoring the sixth Tan- ner goal at 13:31. Jessy Kuenzig took the hat trick with his third goal assisted by Ellis Lavallee and Ryan Faber. Play came to an abrupt halt at 13:05 when two players broke into a fight. Both were ejected. The Tanners waiting for the game to resume, after sorting out the penalties, when several of their undisciplined Fergus players skated over to the Tanner bench and let their frustrations loose. Many Tanners players were drawn into fights. Third period brawl To make matters worse some of the Tan- ners, on the bench at the time of the brawl, were also attacked by the Fergus players. The final display of their behaviour came when one of the Fergus players flew over his own bench, past his coach, on to the ice, and began punching one of the Tanner players on the ice. Officials finally managed to gain control of the game but by that point it was too late. The penalties minutes were high and the suspensions lengthy including the Fergus coach for his lack of control over his own players. Hopefully, the next meeting between these two teams will result in a more disciplined and controlled game by both players and coaching staff.
