BRANCH NO. 197 Comrade, Santas visit: Santa and his helpers hosted the childrens Christmas party at the Branch last Sunday, and he asked me to tell the parents of the children who were unable to attend, that he has left a gift for them with the stewards. Please call and make arrangements to pick up your childs gift as soon as possible, there will be a cut-off date please dont miss it. As always, we, and Santa, are grateful for the fine job done every year by Rhonda and Jim Thornhill, and John Dunn, to make this special day a success. Coming Events: Annual Christmas Turkey Roll, Dec. 15 2-6 p.m. in the Games Room. Come on down and practice your putting stroke, get those draw tickets and generally have a good day in good company. See you there. New Years Eve Party: The tickets are being snapped up at the bar, dont miss the boat. With good friends, good company, and a good DJ (Jesse Forrest) how can you go wrong? Tickets are still on sale at the bar, $30 per person. They are being sold by location (table) so organize your group for an enjoyable New Years Eve and remember the bus ride home, if you reside in town. Yours in comradeship Jim Hayes, Branch 197 PRO Ladies Auxiliary News Thursday evening, Dec. 6, our ladies had a meeting with our annual Christmas party. The evening was well attended with special guests, HO-HO (Santa Claus) with his little elf. Santa and the elf had the ladies in stitches as they had a chance to sit on Santas knee. Santa was doing a lot of sweating. The ladies again would like to thank the Branch for our Christmas din- ner which they supplied and served. The atmosphere was very merry and bright. Santa Claus handed out candy canes for everyone. Christmas carols were sung and had surprise presents. An enjoyable eve- ning was had by all. Thank you, Sue and her helpers, for making the evening so gret. Ontario Command Ladies Auxiliary is having seminars held at Branch 622, Stoney Creek, on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008. Anyone interested? There is a sign-up sheet on the board at the Legion or contact me. Yours in comradeship L.A. President, Annamarie Lowin Police/Fire Report On Wednesday, Dec. 5 District 1 responded to a fire alarm at 346 Guelph Street which was caused by a fire in an industrial process microwave. The fore was ex- tinguished by the fixed Co2 extinguishing system and there was no damage to the process equipment. On Thursday, Dec. 6 Dis- trict 1 responded to a garbage can fire in the washroom at 21 Cedar Road. The fire was ex- tiguished and a portion of the school had to be ventilated. No dollar loss was reported. 17% growth in Halton... continued from page 1 is important to us and to en- sure our continued growth can be supported by sustainable infrastructure. That is why Sustainable Halton and the Fairness for Halton campaign are so important. The Sustainable Halton planning process will deter- mine Haltons human services and transportation, water and waste management infrastruc- ture needs to the year 2031, Haltons needs include: 1100 hospital beds, 50 new elementary schools and 14 new second- ary schools, 25 community centres, 8 libraries, 1650 acres of park- land development, 25 fire halls, 4 ambu- lance stations and 6 police stations. The Fairness for Halton campaign addresses the fact that Halton Region cannot ac- commodate the growth targets specified in the Provinces Places to Grow Plan unless the Ontario government commits to providing the necessary financial tools and funding commitments to address the nearly $300 million required for municipal infrastructure and social service needs. Other figures from the cen- sus show that eight per cent of Haltons population do not primarily speak French or English in the home. The top five languages identified other than English (90%) and French (.7%) spoken most often in Halton homes are Chinese, Polish, Spanish, Punjabi and Portuguese. In 2005 Halton began offering customer service to non-English speaking residents. Callers to Halton Region, including those calling Haltons new 211 information and refer- ral service, have access to telephone translators in 150 languages. Tanner ads work.
