Margaret Anderson the president of the board of Acton Seniors Centre asked me to mention how much we appreciate all the sup- port the people and various businesses in Acton and the surrounding area have given us over the years. We hope everyone enjoyed a wonder- ful Christmas, and enjoyed the holidays. We hope that 2008 brings everyone health and happiness. The Centre will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Joanne Bissonnette and Bev Jones worked very hard to make Christmas very special for two families, one with two little boys and one with a little boy and girl. They found out what their wish lists were, and the members of the Centre helped fill the boxes. It was so sad when you read what these children wished for, items so small but special to them and you hear what other children expect from Santa. Hopefully they had a wonderful Christmas and felt Yes! There really is a Santa Claus. Joanne and Bev asked me to thank everyone who helped in any way. Pauline Barlow had a won- derful Christmas present. Her locked van was stolen from outside the Elizabeth Street Seniors Apartment on De- cember 13, and as many know Walter has to use a walker or a wheelchair to get around. Coincidences are very strange because Colin Davis who lives on 32 Sideroad found a walker and van chair dumped in his front yard, then when he took his daughter to work at the Blue Springs golf course they noticed more van items on the Dublin Line. He asked Randy Gerrow if he thought Links2Care might be able to use the walker. When Randy asked his wife Cathy (who works there) if anyone needed one, he discovered Pauline had been in telling Cathy about her stolen van. Luckily the stripped van was found in Brantford, so once all the equipment has been reinstalled, they will be all set to go again. Two buses full of seniors and their caregivers enjoyed the annual Tour of the Lights thanks to Ted Tyler and his company, and his drivers Pat Graham and Wayne Stewart. Following the trip they de- scended on the Centre and enjoyed hot grape and apple cider (which was made and donated by Victor and Car- man Bissonnette). Donna Rowley, Nettie Field, Joanne Bissonnette, and Lennora McKinnon made the deli- cious snacks and Marj Bartels and Betty Green dispensed the punch. It takes more than snow to keep the carpet bowlers home. Eight bowlers braved a snowy but well cleared car park last Monday after the big snowstorm. Peggy told me Bev Joness Brown team beat Pat Joness Black team 10 9. A close game. The next time they play will be on Monday, Jan. 7 at 1 a.m. Line dancing will resume on January 7 if there is enough interest, and the Wednesday art class on will resume on January 23. The evening euchre was enjoyed by all who played and the lone hand was won by Fran Ruthven, High Wom- an - Elinore Shannon, 2nd Woman - Marj Britton, High Man - Robert Foster and Don Milton, and 2nd Man - Steve Palichuk, the booby prize by Donna Rowley. The next game will be Wednesday, Jan. 16. Thinking of memberships, have you renewed yours? Memberships run from Janu- ary to December. Last year we had 352 members, and this year only 184 have renewed theirs. Considering there are 37 new members it means half of last years members havent renewed their mem- bership for 2008. Dont forget its no good putting your loo- nie in the box as your name has been pulled if you havent paid your membership. The Garage with the Personal Touch 255 Main Street North Acton (519) 853-3261 David Wilson Owner/Operator Ted Saitz Owner/Operator Halton Regional Police are warn- ing seniors of individuals placing phone calls and posing as a fam- ily member in an attempt to scam money. Recently, there have been a num- ber of occurrences in Oakville and Burlington where a senior receives a call by someone posing as a fam- ily member. After a few minutes of friendly dialogue the caller asks for money to be sent to them as they are in trouble. The caller then pleads with the senior not to tell the rest of the family about this. At this time of year the public needs to be diligent and remember that there are individuals in society that will take advantage of their giv- ing nature, Halton police say. Be cautious when speaking on the phone if you are uncertain of the caller. Never arrange to give money over the phone by way of a credit card or by sending money or in any other way. Confirm with other family members if a rela- tive has called and is requesting assistance, police advise. Police warn of senior scam LEGION NEWS By James Hayes P.R.O.
