McDonell The Acton Major Midget Tanners had a win and two losses when they trav- elled north to Elmvale to participate in their annual tournament last weekend. In the first game, Acton faced Niagara-on-the-Lake in a very close, exciting game controlled by Acton with most of the first per- iod play in Niagaras end with multiple quality shots on net but no scoring. There were lots of pen- alties, but no scoring in the second period, but the Tanners got on the board in the third period when Jesse Kuenzig sent a hard shot flying from midway between the blue line and the net to bury it in the top corner behind the Niag- ara goalie and take a 1:0 lead. This Friday the Lightning faces off with the Cougars at 10:00 p.m. and the Sharks visit the Devils at 11p.m. Acton Ladies Hockey, the place to be Friday night at the Acton Arena! Rick and Josey Bonnette Atom Chargers take 5-3 win over Raiders Midget Tanners are 1-2 As the third period drew into the final minute, it appeared Niagara might score, but defenseman Dylan Creasey and Ste- ven Wolstenholme put together an awesome play with Creasey feeding a blue line pass to Wols- tenhome along the boards inside the zone. They continued to pass the puck until Creasey scored and with 42 seconds re- maining in the game, the Tanners shut down any chances Niagara had of a tie. Goalies Joey Drexler and Mike Farrow shared duties and held strong for the win. In Game two, the Tan- ners faced host team Elmvale. While there were some great rushes by both teams the first period was scoreless and in the second period Elmvale scored as the Tanners had trouble clearing the puck from their zone. The host team moved ahead to a 3- 0 and padded their lead with two more goals for a 5-0 win. Injuries side- lined two Tanner players including Ryan Faber who hurt his tailbone and Dylan Creasey who broke his ankle. In Game three, the Tanner dropped a 2-1 decision to the unbeaten Beeton Stingers who ar- rived with a well stocked bench as opposed to Ac- tons bench which was done to 10 players. The Tanners stepped up to the challenge with good, sharp passing and fast pick-ups to turn the play around. Defense pro- vided by Jordan Duin, Steven Wolstenholme, Cody Rowsell and Evan M c M e e k i n s t o p p e d Beeton from scoring, and Brandon McCarthy picked up a rebound and sent it past the Beeton goalie for a 1-0 lead. Second period action also proved to be fast- paced, awesome hockey with both forward and de- fense lines covering their respective positions and holding the lead. Midway through the final period, Beeton tied the game and in the final minute of play, the Tanners pulled their goalie, but Beeton potted an empty-netter for the win. The Tanner did not have the seven goal lead required to move forward in tourney play. Con- gratulations to the team for giving those in the stands some edge-of-our- seats action and enjoyable hockey to watch.
