Tina McLeod gave the Cou- gars an early lead with an assist to Mary Lou Dixon. Jen Stel- mach tied the game as she went coast to coast on a rush. Ute Cole then put the Cougars ahead with Tina McLeod and Mary Lou Dixon getting helpers. With less that a minute to go, Lightning coach Bucky Kirk- patrick pulled his goalie for the sixth attacker. Daina McKellar took a shot from the point that was stopped. However, Jen Stel- mach slammed in the rebound. Tracy Ferguson was also credited with an assist. Sharks bite In the second game X Marks The Fitness Spot Sharks defeated the DNR Contracting Devils 4 2. Liz Holmes gave the Sharks a 1 0 lead with assists going to Josey Bonnette and Carrie Gal- lant. The lead was short lived as Nicholl Spence scored with an assist to Carolyn Hill. Car- rie Gallant then ripped a shot that found the back of the net from a pass from Gloria Lipp- Stamp. Annette Kroezen then scored from Karen Bell. Karen Bell then rounded out the scoring for the Sharks with a set up from Kroezen and Lipp-Stamp. Nicholl Spence replied for the Devils on an unassisted goal to make the final score 4 2 in fa- vour of the Sharks. This Friday the Lightning faces off against the Sharks at 10pm and the Devils visit the Cougars at 11pm. Acton Ladies Hockey, the place to be Friday night at the Acton Arena! Rick and Josey Bonnette Atom Chargers Win again Acton Atom Chargers faced Wellington Sunday, and came away with a hard fought 4-2 vic- tory. Wellington came out hopping, scoring within the first 2 minutes of the game, while the Chargers took their time regrouping to score their first goal. Hunter Canary potted a loose rebound after Dylan Verm- eulen fired the shot on net. Shortly after that Spencer Evans captures Shannon Oultons rebound and hammered it behind the Wellington goalie putting Acton up 2-1. After a great passing play from Reilly Constable, Matthew Miehm slammed home the Chargers third goal. After another Wellington tally, the Chargers pulled out the 4-2 victory in large part due to Griffin Cunneyworths outstanding play. Wellington was constantly frustrated by the quick glove and excellent positional play of Cun- neyworth. We passed the puck very well but Grffin had to bail us out at numerous times, or the game would have had a much dif- ferent outcome said coach Scott Thomson. Bantam BB Tanners win Fergus Legion Tournament The Acton Tanners Ban- tam BB team participated in the 23rd Annual Fergus Legion Rep Hockey Tour- nament on the weekend of Dec 5-7 and came home champions. Despite the 8am start on Friday, the Tanners had their legs going right from the get go and the result was a fast paced game against the Burling- ton Bulldogs (Alliance) team. The Tanners held the decided margin in ter- ritorial play through the first period as Burlington only managed one shot on net in the entire period. The second per iod started similarly as Acton continued to press, but it was Burlington who managed to score the fist goal, despite only getting 4 shots in the 2nd. The Tanners did not panic at being behind and con- tinued to skate hard and create chances. In a goal- mouth scramble Tyler Christopher scored to tie the game at 1-1 going into the 3rd. The 3rd period was all Tanners, as they scored 3 more goals to secure the win. Scoring in the 3rd were Ben Roelofson, Armyn Ashrafi and Mitch- ell Brake. Assists went to Roelofson, Christopher and Justin Giordano. Storm shut-out The Saugeen Shores Storm, an old nemesis of Acton Tanners hockey re- introduced themselves to the Bantam BB team on Friday in game two of the Fergus tournament, shut- ting down the Tanners 3-0. The Tanners were held to just 7 shots the entire game, while the Storm re- corded 15. Going into their 3rd round robin game the Tanners needed a tie to garner a spot in the semi- final thats exactly what they did, tying the Owen Sound Jr. Attack 1-1. Scor- ing the lone goal for Acton was Mitchell Brake. Greg Slowka made 10 saves to secure the tie for the Tan- ners and was just 7 ticks away from a shutout and a win. Semi-Final: After los- ing to the Saugeen Shores Storm in the round robin portion of the tournament 3-0 and by qualifying for the playoff round as the last seed, the Tanners entered the semi-final as the decided underdog. But Sunday saw a much different Tanner hockey team. This was not the team that got shut out (for the only time this season) by the Saugeen squad on Friday while only manag- ing 7 shots on goal. The game was fast, physical and well fought. Greg Wells was the first to hit the score sheet on a perfect feed from Mitch- ell Brake in the second. Kurt is Ruhl added a second for Acton (from Jake Macpherson) to end the 2nd with the Tanners up 2-0. Michael Courvoi- sier added an insurance goal in the 3rd from Nick VanDerEyken, final score 3-0 for Acton. Mitchell Christopher was stellar between the pipes for the Tanners, in recording a shutout. The Final: The Tan- ners went into the final of the Fergus tournament against a well-rested Dun- das Blues team on Sunday evening. Dundas received a bye into the final, as a result of placing first in the round robin part of the tournament. The Tanners were playing their second game of the day and fifth of the weekend, but fa- tigue was not a factor as once again the Acton team skated hard from start to finish. The extra fitness work the team is doing ap- pears to be having some benefit. Rewarded for their hard work, the Tanners popped two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Playing a disciplined defensive game the Tan- ners did not allow Dundas to get many shots on net. Mitchell Christopher was only called upon to make nine stops in recording his second shutout of the day. Dundas played their usual hard-hitting style, but the Tanners were not intimi- dated and traded hits with Dundas all game long. In the end the Tanners scored an empty netter to seal the deal and win the game (3-0) and the tour- nament. The Tanners were well supported in the final by a loud Acton cheering sec- tion, which outcheered the Dundas supporters for most of the game. Scor ing for Acton: Courvoisier with 2 and Josh Tremblay with 1. As- sists went to Courvoisier and Ruhl with 1 each. Congratulations to the Bantam BB team (play- ers, coaches and parents) for a job well done!!
