Anyone can assemble a team if they meet age requirements and put their hockey to the test among 500 competitors. Games will be played on 12 natural rinks on Valens Lake a location that consistently has great ice while only being minutes from Hamilton. The event is run by the same team that runs the Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships, ensuring a world-class event. The games will be played pretty much the same way Canadas pond hockey pioneers competed in the late 19th century. There will be few rules (except those focused on safety and fair play), no goalies and no on-ice officials. It all adds up to an exceptionally exciting brand of hockey, something every recreational player and fan needs to experience, says a media release from Gary Holloway. Passion for the game is essentially the only criteria to register, that and a minimum age restriction of 25 for men, and 19 for women. Current professional, college and university players are not eligible. Any- one in Acton interested in entering a team to 2009 Ontario Pond Hockey Championships should visit www.canadapondhockey.ca soon for the complete details. There are openings for just 72 teams on a first registered, first served basis. Teams can consist of from 4 to 6 players. Pond hockey is booming in Canada. In just three years, the Canadian National Pond Hockey Cham- pionships has grown into the largest event of its kind in the world. Registering a team in that event has become exceedingly difficult, as tens of thousands of players from across Canada and the globe lock up registration early, putting the event into a waiting list situation months before the event. Players have come from as far away as Africa, New Zealand and Japan. Qualifying events are now held in Ontario (at Valens) and new for 2009 is the Western Regional Pond Hockey Championships in Rossland, B.C. The teams that come up on top, men and women, will automatically advance to 2010 Nationals at Deerhurst in Muskoka.
