My column will be short and sweet this week due to a very early deadline. Over 50 seniors and care- givers enjoyed the 10th annual Tour of Lights. Every year the displays get more imaginative, and stunning. Thank goodness for LED lights which help keep the hydro costs down. Big thanks goes to Wayne Stewart and Pat Graham, the Tyler drivers who not only volunteer their time but take the time before hand to check out where the best displays are. They toured Acton, Georgetown and Norval. Margaret An- derson and Mary Walsma (our president and vice president) prepared and served treats and a warm drink to the returning travel- lers, and, of course, a special thanks to Ted Tyler, without his generosity it wouldnt be possible. In closing, I would like to wish all the New Tan- ner readers a very happy Christmas, a joyous holiday season, and a healthy New Year. Christmas candles symbol of nativity Candles or tapers have long been used by Chris- tians as a symbol of Christ, The Light of the Worlds, but until electricity came to homes in the 19th cen- tury they were also part of everyday life in Canada. People made their own candles for centuries. At holy day time a large candle was lit in homes and displayed in a window the entire night to mark the Nativity. The custom still per- sists in some countries such as France, Ireland, Denmark and England, Canadian families light candles decorated with pine, or fir-branches dur- ing Christmas dinner but the meaning has been ob- scured by the passage of time. Candles are enjoying a come back again. Fire departments which must quench flames started by careless people are im- ploring residents to never leave lighted candles un- attended. Store helps needy family Acton Home Hardware gave back to the com- munity this Christmas by adopting a needy family from Acton. And Acton jumped in and helped. Several gifts were given to the children, enough to ensure Christmas was not part of their imagination but a reality. Mom was not forgotten either. Cash donations at the stores registers ensured gift cards could be pur- chased and a Christmas dinner enjoyed. Bill and Val Manes, Home Hardware owners and their staff, were ap- preciative of all the help they received in making sure Christmas was a joy- ful one for their adopted family. The commun- ity of Acton truly has a heart that makes wishes come true, they said. Believe there is a Santa Claus and hes here in Acton.
