Mayor wants to freeze salaries To debate motion on January 19 Fire Report Sustainability means different things to differ- ent communities so one of the jobs facing local politicians is deciding exactly what sustainabil- ity means to Halton Hills. Town councillors approved a sustainability work plan and endorsed creation of an internal staff sustainability team last week decisions that are expected to receive full Council ap- proval on Monday. Damian Szybalski, the Towns sustainabil- ity coordinator said sustainability essentially means integrating the environmental, economic, cultural and social interests and benefits of a community to make sure all those aspects of the community are healthy and growing in a positive way. It is a holistic approach and one that doesnt just look at the bottom line the cost when determining if a project or policy should be ap- proved. The new approach is called the triple boom line meaning that along with financial considerations, the environmental and cultural and social aspects should also be weighed. In his report to Council, Szybalski said tran- sitioning to sustainability requires a significant change requiring a dedicated effort and genuine commitment and collaboration on sustainability by council, residents, businesses, institutions and other levels of government. In an interview Szybalski said the next step for the Town is to explore and define what sustain- ability means to Halton Hills. Continued on Page 3 By Frances Niblock Its not the amount of the wage freeze that counts but denying themselves a salary hike this year is a symbolic gesture that Mayor Rick Bonnette hopes will resonate with local taxpayers who may be feeling the pinch of tough economic times. The mayor filed a No- tice of Motion at last weeks Council meeting to cancel any salary increase for himself and Town councillors this year. The motion will be debated at the January 19 Council meeting.
