No applications accepted after Feb. 15/09 ATTENTION SENIORS Halton Hills and Halton region taxpayers should begin to see reductions in property tax pressures as welfare and court security costs are being moved off the property tax base and will now be covered by the Province of Ontario, over a period of 10 years. Currently, municipal- ities pay for certain social assistance program costs, including a portion of On- tario Works benefits and court security costs, from property taxes. This will no longer be the case as a result of an agreement reached by the McGuinty government, the Associa- tion fo Municipalities of Ontario and the City of Toronto. For Halton Region, this will mean $22,530,000 in increased annual benefit by the time the uploading is complete. Starting in 2010, the Province will upload the municipal costs of On- tario Works benefits over nine years. This will re- duce municipal costs by more then $400 million an- nually upon completion. The uploads will mean that municipalities can build and repair more infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, libraries, recreation centres, sewer systems and water plants. Once fully implemented, the uploads agreed to in the report will result in a net annual benefit to mu- nicipalities of more then $1.5 billion compared to 2007. Taxpayers should benefit from uploading Fire Report Continued from Page 1 Continued from Page 1 Frugal Five You dont have to spend big bucks to have fun in the Acton area many groups offer events for free, or at a price thats easy on the wallet. The leak occurred when they tried to siphon the gasoline from the vehicle. Acton firefighters turned the scene over to Halton police. No injuries No one was trapped or injured in a motor vehicle accident at Highway 7 and Coles Court at 3:47 last Wednesday afternoon. Acton firefighters report a vehicle made a U-turn and was hit. Halton police and an ambulance also re- sponded to the accident. Joan Robson said she was pleased to endorse the No- tice of Motion, because no matter how symbolic it is, it recognizes tight economic times. If we are asking other people to tighten their belt, I think that we need to do likewise, she said. Foregoing a salary in- crease in 2009 will save the Town approximately $8,500. The Mayor cur- rently earns $52,473 and Town councillors earn $22,329, amounts set fol- lowing a three per cent wage increase approved in January, 2008. The two Town coun- cillors and the mayor, who also sit on Hal- ton Regional Council, receive an additional $42,804. Halton councillors re- cently gave themselves a 5.4 per cent wage increase, a move de- nounced by Ward Two Regional and Town Councillor Jane Fogal and Mayor Bonnette.
