Submitted photo Soccer cheque in aid of 900 players By Frances Niblock Acton Villa Soccer Club officials gave big thanks to the Town recently with a big cheque for $50,000, complet- ing the clubs financial promise to the Town for the Acton Sports Park project. Thanks for giving us what we wanted at a price we could afford, said club president Ian Watson as he presented an over-sized cheque to the Town last Monday. The final instalment in- creased the clubs contribution to the Acton Sports Park pro- ject to $150,000. The initial $100,000 cheque was handed over to the Town two years ago to help pay for Phase One of the project, which opened this past summer. Club volunteers mainly parents of players worked at a now defunct charity bingo hall in Milton for 20 years to raise the money. Watson said the club con- tinues to show steady growth, doubling in size since 2002, with approximately 900 regis- tered outdoor players last season. We calculate that this means 30 per cent of the chil- dren of school age in Acton play soccer with the Acton Soccer Club, and so it is im- portant that they have the best of facilities, he said, noting that prior to construction of the Acton Sports Park, nearly all of their fields were on school board property. He said they enjoy a good relationship with the board of education and still rent the school-owned fields which represent approximately 60 to 70 per cent of the clubs capacity. Watson said prior to the Acton Sports Club fields, the newest facility was the Ren- nie Street park where he said it was slopey with more weeds than grass, but still al- lowed them to reduce usage at McKenzie-Smith Bennetts fields where they had Under- five players playing at the ends of the adult fields. It was all a bit dangerous really. Well, not really danger- ous, but it would hurt a bit if you got hit with an unexpect- ed ball, Watson said, adding even with the new fields they are very grateful with the help from the Town and school board to access the fields on school property. Watson said the organization is very proud that they opted to support this project in its entirety by going beyond just wanting to support the soccer fields. but it wouldnt be pos- sible to build this project without all of the landscap- ing features in the plan, but we didnt want to cut back on any of the extra features and so the soccer club agreed to con- tribute on the understanding that everyone in Acton would have a better crown jewel to our recreational facilities in the Town, he said, adding they are looking forward to playing again on the lighted fields and everyone enjoys a nice facility at Acton eastern entrance. Watson noted that registra- tion is underway for this years outdoor soccer season and theres a 20 per cent discount for anyone who signs up be- fore January 31, either on-line or at Actons Dollar Stretcher Daze.
