Many of you always shop local. It is now equally im- portant to continue to shop local in these difficult eco- nomic times. We have many businesses in our community who provide professional ser- vice. So, the next time you need furniture, an insurance quote, a can of paint, an oil change, or a contractor, or whatever, consider giving the local businesses the first crack. They are the ones who pay taxes, employ local people, and donate to local charities and sponsor your kids sports teams. * * * * Speaking of this challeng- ing economy, some of our local residents may find them- selves out of work. There are many services available in our community to assist those looking for new jobs, a career change, or for those wishing to start their own business. A great local resource is the Halton Hills Public Libraries which is a one stop resource centre for Federal and Pro- vincial programs, the Region of Halton, and the Town of Halton Hills. You can access the Li- brarys online services with your library card, and you can connect 24/7 to over 50 databases to find informa- tion on thousands of careers. Our libraries provide internet workstations and access to word processing and resume writing software. Halton Hills is committed to helping residents search for a new job. The libraries in Acton and Georgetown should be your first stop in your career search. Links are provided through the Towns web site at www.haltonhills. ca * * * * On January 11, our Halton Hills Firefighters hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni in a hockey game. Of course, the retired Maple Leafs won the game, but our group made a fine showing. The real winner of the game was CASHH (Cancer Assistance Services Halton Hills) as the proceeds from the game went to this worthwhile organiza- tion. Shauna Dunwoody (a victim to cancer) played a tremendous game in goal. Shauna, you were an inspira- tion to the 1,000 spectators at the game. Special thanks to Brian Turner and Brian Faubert who put countless hours behind the scenes to make this event go without a hitch. * * * * The Mayors Artwall is presently showcasing wa- tercolour prints from the William Band Studio/Gal- lery. * * * * Keeping it real! I can be reached by telephone at 905-873-2601, ext. 2342, or by e-mail at: mayor@haltonhills.ca.
