THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2009 12 Acton Novice Chargers hosted the Major Novice George- town Raiders. Georgetown opened the scoring 5 minutes into the game. It stayed that way until 8:17 of the 2nd period when Actons Jake Case fired a shot from the right face-off circle with as- sists going to Jacob Caldwell and Nicholas Jones. At 7:40 of the third period, Jacob Caldwell beat the puck inside the blue line finding Jake Case alone in front. He scored his second of the game giving Acton a 2-1 lead. But with 3:01 remaining in the 3rd period, the Raiders tied the game 2-2. The way it ended. The game featured lots of chances for both teams. Both goaltenders played awesome, players were denied on breakaways and close in, great game to watch, says Acton coach Mike Case. With Georgetown being a Major team and our team has first and second year players, our team played great! The teams exchanged equal amounts of chances to score. The Chargers now have a record of 3 wins, 4 losses and a tie. Next up for Acton is Saturday, Jan 31 in Mississaugua and Sunday, Feb 1 in Hillsburgh vs Waterloo. In Acton Ladies Hockey Friday, the Staying Alive Fitness Cougars tied Ac- ton Optical Lightning 2 - 2. Both teams scored in the first per- iod. Daina McKellar scored the first unassisted goal for the Lightning and Mary Lou Dixon replied on an unassisted goal for the Cougars. Mc- Kellar then scored her second goal giving the Lightning a brief lead. Jane McKay and Gina Wright earned as- sists. The Cougars clawed back on an un- assisted goal by Tina Mcleod in the second period. In the second game, the X Marks The Fitness Spot Sharks defeated the DNR Contracting Devils 4 - 1. Carrie Gallant led the Shark attack with a hat trick. The Sharks got off to an early start with two quick goals by Gallant, Karen Bell had assists on both goals while Lisa Cropper and Jackie Wilson also had assists. Sarah Taylor put the Dev- ils on the board with assists from Kim Bandy-Bollert and Dawn Civiero. Annette Kroezen got one back for the Sharks with Evelyn Bedard and Jo- sey Bonnette getting the helpers. The Chargers matched up well against the Flyers in the first period, and opened the scoring with a top shelf goal by Hunter Canary. The Flyers fought back to pot the next three goals until Mal- colm Davidson went top shelf himself, getting help from line mates Shannon Oulton and Spencer Evans. The Chargers could not capitalize on their chances by Edith McDonell The Acton Major Midget Tanners started their OMHA playoffs with a round robin format of six games; three vs Dundas and the other three against Erin/Hillsburgh. Their first game played was at home against the Erin Devils on Saturday, Jan. 17. The Tanners broke open the scoring in period one as call-up player Mitchell Webster sent a pass out from the cor- ner to Steven Wolstenholme waiting in front of the net. The team was glad to have Captain Dylan Creasey back for his second game since a broken ankle sidelined him over two months ago. The second period saw Erin tie it up within the first minute of play. Tanners Jesse Kuenzig would regain the lead with a back hander to the short side on a power play and help from Nick Egan. Erin quickly drew even as they scored 36 seconds later. Both teams lost a player in the period to hitting from behind penalties. Erin capitalized on their next power play to pull ahead, then padded their lead with two more goals in the third period to hand the Tanners a 5-2 loss. On Monday Jan. 19 the Acton team visited Erin with greater determination and tenacity and emerged with a 2-1 victory. The first period went scoreless but midway through the second, a mad rush down the ice by Dylan to feed Steven a perfect pass who then sent it across to Mark Wells for a power play goal to open scoring and take a 1:0 lead. This single goal held the game right until 2:39 of the third period when Erin tied it up. That goal sent the game into an overtime period of ten minutes. As the clock ticked down, it appeared the final would be a tie. However the Tanners were not willing to give it up. With 1:15 left on the timer, Mark Wells placed the puck in the net for his second goal of the night with assistance from Josh McDonell and David Tysoe. It was a well fought late night 2-1 vic- tory with added credit to goalie Joey Drexler. Trip Dundas The Tanners third game was a trip to Dundas on Saturday Jan. 24 where they won again after a multi-penaltied first period. Ryan Faber placed a short shot through the five hole at 3:45 to put the Tanners on the scoreboard. Continued pressure by our visiting Tanners upped the score 2-0 as Steven scored just three seconds into a power play. However, Dundas would rebound just as the per- iod ended to close the gap 2-1. The final period started with exciting hockey as the first rush brought about a nicely executed play with Jesse Kuen- zig carrying the puck in, passing to Brandon McCarthy waiting at the net. Once the goalie committed he, shov- elled it back to Jesse, now covering the opposite corner of the net, and in to take a 3-1 lead. However, the two goal lead quickly evaporated as Dundas managed to score two within a two minute time span. Both teams tried without success to break the tie and overtime was starting to look like a reality but Steven, Dylan and Evan McMeekin thought otherwise and combined to score with just 1:20 remaining in the game. Dundas played six on five for the re- mainder of the game but the Tanners shut them down for settling for a 4-3 win, thanking Mike Farrow for his play in the net as well as earning an assist. Off to good start Atom Chargers lose to Major Orangeville in the third period to battle back, and eventually came up short losing 5-2. Acton was again solid in net, with many timely saves by Griffin Cunneyworth. Considering the Flyers were a Major Atom team we are pleased with our ef- fort, coach Scott Thomson said, We will build from our experience and continue to get better from games like this.
