One-time Leaf defense prospect Jeff Ware, still waiting for that call from Cliff Fletcher, lit up the board with an early hat-trick while referee Bryan Lewis, from his (suspicious) game-long vantage point at the blue-line in front of the visitors bench, failed to see at least 23 Firefighter goals. True to career form, Lewis also missed every offside while following the advice of the famous deceased army warrior: If you get lost, al- ways look good. Meanwhile, the likes of Steve Thomas, Bill Der- lago, Gary Leeman, Rick Nattress and Lou Fran- ceschetti pushed the Leafs score into double figures de- spite first-line curmudgeon Wilf Paiement, who proved a thorn in his own sides ef- fort with his unsportsmanlike tactics. Paiement hit all four tar- gets in the shooting accuracy contest after fooling Lewis into awarding him extra pucks; then, after scuffling with teammate Franceschetti Paiement dumped a full pail of water into the Firefight- ers bench. His antics forced even the saintly Lewis to award a penalty shot to Fire- fighters mystery ringer Josey the Outlaw, who easi- ly dangled Carleton the Bear to fire up the crowd and the dormant home side. Paie- ment attempted to out the mysterious Outlaw with a feigned group photo at cen- tre ice, but a timely cream pie kept the Outlaws secret safe for another year. Jack Valiquette, one-time OHL scoring champion, proved not quite as skillful in his role as Lewis co-referee and quasi-PA announcer. Gary Leeman handed the inept ringmaster his hockey stick, with instructions to make a useful contribution to the affair; Valiquette both greatly pleased the crowd and showed off his officiat- ing credentials by skating in a large circle with Leemans stick perched vertically on his nose. True to the form of their current NHL namesakes, the Leafs declined to play the third period. The Firefight- ers as expected were not intimidated by Paiements watery crime; they fought back with a clever sleeper play, a player pretending to fall over the back of the net and tossing the puck over the net resulting in a goalmouth melee. The outcome is still under review at NHL Central Com- mand. Was it a hockey play or just great entertain- ment in a worthy cause? The three stars? Number three: Steve Thomas, still with a magical shot and still too good for the American League. Number two: The most beautiful sound in nature not made by loons at sundown the hypnotic rhythm of tape to tape passes of endless variety and skill. And the First Star: a tidy sum raised for C.A.S.H. Cancer Assistance Services of Halton, thanks to the or- ganizational efforts of Kevin Usher and many volunteers. Acton Firefighters suiting up for this tilt were goal- ies Bryce Marshall and Alf Scott; Jamie Galway, Dave Pratt, Trevor McNally, Tim Robertson and Bob Andrews (and son Michael, a George- town Firefighter).
