Town Digest POLICE BEAT Alarming matter At midnight on January 23, the Discount Variety Store at the corner of Mill and John Streets had a beer bottle thrown through their window, setting off the alarm, and alerting the owner. Police are unsure if this was a foiled break and enter attempt or just mischief. Mistake made On January 24 at 11:42pm police stopped an individual and charged him with breach of probation and said he was intoxicated and belligerent. Three days later, he was charged from a failure to remain at the scene of a motor vehicle accident from December 27 where a parked car was hit from another vehicle backing into it. Charged is a 20-year-old from Acton. Fresh food Healthy food at a good price are the hallmarks of Haltons Fresh Food Box program that proves fruit and vegetables to people with low incomes, new Canadians and to seniors on a monthly basis. With grants from the On- tario Trillium Foundation and Choices 4 Health, and partnerships with an Oak- ville church, the Halton Multicultural Council and Haltons Health Department, the program provides pre- purchased boxes of locally grown fresh vegetables and fruit at a modest cost. The food is delivered to two central locations where it is boxed by volunteers and delivered to neighbourhood drop site, which in Acton in- cludes the community HUB at McKenzie-Smith Bennett School and theLinks2Care office on Mill Street. Acton resident Pat Frizzell volunteered with the program for three years one of 130 volunteers and said it is well run and very much ap- preciated by the people who pay either $12 for a small box of produce or $15 for a large box. We served as between 50 and 65 people each month and it is certainly worth it. People were satisfied with what they got and it encouraged them to eat healthy and saved them money, Frizzell said last Monday. A report to Halton Coun- cil last Wednesday indicated that in 2006, 6,156 boxes of produce were distributed, or about 500 boxes each month and in 2008, the number jumped to 580 boxes per month. The food is purchased from local farmers, or wholesalers if it not available locally. Funding from the program comes from a number of sources, including the Health Departments budget. Because of the growth of the program, issues including becoming incorporated to have charitable status, human resources and space issues to meet and or expand the program are being studied. OMB bound The fate of plans for a pro- posed private school near Ballinafad rests with the On- tario Municipal Board (OMB) after Town and Regional councillors voted against the proposal which was sup- ported by their respective planning staffs. Based on concerns about increased traffic, road safety and the impact of the proposed elementary school on local wells, Town and Regional politicians rejected an ap- plication for the Keswick Sutherland School on 95 acres on the Eighth Line between 27 and 32 Side Roads. Halton Hills and Halton planning staff support the plan, along with a number of commenting agencies including the Credit Valley Conservation and Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Town staff said the pro- posed school/equestrian centre represents good plan- ning and a compatible rural land use. During Town Council debate, Regional and Town Councillor Clark Somer- ville argued that the plan does not meet the Official Plans and does not serve the majority of Halton Hills residents Mayor Rick Bonnette said there too many unknowns including the hours of oper- ation and traffic issues.
