Halton Region EMS para- medics can now transport patients with a certain type of heart attack directly into the Cardiac Catheteriza- tion lab at Trillium Health Centre - bypassing the pa- tients local hospital and Trilliums Emergency. The new protocol was launched on Monday, Dec. 14, 2008 by Tril- lium and Halton Region EMS, supported by the Mississauga-Halton Lo- cal Health Integration Network (LHIN), the Sunnybrook-Osler Centre for Pre-Hospital Care, and Halton Healthcare Servi- ces, to improve cardiac care services in Halton Region including Halton Hills, Oakville and Mil- ton. When patients are diag- nosed by Advanced Care Paramedics with a specific type of heart attack, called ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), they consult one of Trilliums interventional cardiolo- gists and bring the patient directly to the Cardiac Catheterization lab at Trillium for primary per- c u t a n e o u s c o r o n a r y intervention (PPCI) within 90 minutes. Research has shown that patients with ST- Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) re- ceive greater benefit from treatment with primary percutaneous coron- ary intervention (PPCI) instead of traditional thrombolytic (blood clot busting drugs) therapy. In short, patients have better outcomes when cardi- ologists use a balloon catheter and stent to open the blocked coronary ar- tery instead of drugs that dissolve the clot blocking the artery. When a Halton Region EMS advanced care para- medic (ACP) identifies a patient with a heart attack that meets the STEMI protocol criteria, the ACP will consult with one of Trilliums four interven- tional cardiologists by telephone. Upon accept- ance of the patient by the interventional cardi- ologist, the patient is transported directly to the Cardiac Cath Lab at Tril- lium for PPCI. The patient receives treatment at Tril- lium within 90 minutes from the initial diagno- sis by the ACP, including transport and intervention time. On December 21, 2008, the first two STEMI pa- tients were brought in from Milton and Oak- ville, respectively, after suffering heart attacks when using their snow blowers in cold weather.
