Born in Tokushi Siberia April 23, 1923, his German Mennonite family fled Russia in 1929 settling in Kitchener. On the train leaving Moscow was his mother Katharina and brothers and sisters: Alice, Katie, and Martha Friesen and Agatha, John and David Barkman. Captain Walter (Wally) Barkman served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in WWII. He fought in France in Caen and Falaise; through Flan- ders and the Scheldt in Belgium and into the Netherlands. He was wounded leading B Company into the Hochwald forest in Germany. He returned near wars end and rode into Berlin to the Chancellery. He was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Leopold II with Palm and Croix de Guerre with Palm. Walter kept Mabel Ellen Brantons picture throughout the war marrying her on June 29, 1946. It was a true love story. Graduating in Business at Western he worked for Brantford Roofing, Domtar and Dominion Bridge as a sales man- ager. He is survived by his wife; great grandchildren Paisley and Colby; grandchildren Tom, Jamie, Aiden, Claire, Ryan and Tianna, and children Nick Barkman (wife Diane), and Randy Barkman (wife Jenny), Diane Warren (husband Don) and Ellen Stanley (husband Stephen). A memorial service will be held March 21 3:00 at St. Alban the Martyr Anglican Church 19 St. Albans Drive, Acton Ontario. We all miss him so much. DEVRIES: Bill Country singer, Bill DeVries, has passed away at his home in Acton on Saturday, February 28, 2009, with his family by his side, at age 70. He performed with the Country Ds, Now and Then Country and A Touch of Silver. He has recorded several collections of music. Bill has been cremated and a memorial service in celebration of his life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Acton Branch 197 on Tuesday March 3,, 2009 at 1pm. He was in his 92nd year. John was pre- deceased by his beloved wife, Joan Elliott. He will be sadly missed by his great-nephew, Trevor Murray and his very good friends: Joanne Bottom of Irvine (California) and Gayle and Richard Gwilt (Ac- ton). John served in the Navy during WW II, following his discharge he joined the Naval Reserve and rose to the highest rank of Commodore. After leaving the Navy, he went on to pass the bar and receive his law degree. John was the Aide-de-Camp for Gov- ernor General Roland Michener and Governor General George P. Vanier. Predeceased by her husband Bill Hodge (1981). Loving mother of: Frances (Michael), Richard (Charlene) and Susan; grand- mother of Andrew, Christopher, Peter, Alexander, Benjamin, and extended family Kate, Glen, Bob, Jesse and Braedan. She will be missed by brother Peter (Valerie) and sisters Margaret and Sandra (Bruce) and their families. Jane was born and lived in Capetown, South Africa and her childhood was spent in both Africa and Eng- land. As a young adult, she lived in Jamaica where she met and married Bill Hodge. Jane and Bill moved to Canada in the early 50s, finally settling in the Acton area in 1963. Jane was an active participant for many years with the Georgetown Choral Society, the Acton Tai Chi Society, the Acton Community Seniors Centre, the Acton Golf Club, the Horticultural Society, the Erin Tennis Club, and the Cancer Society. She was a lover of great beauty in all things; she found tremendous joy in her flower garden, and the countryside in which she chose to live and die. Through her years working at Carolines nursery garden and her various activities, she developed many close friends whom she cher- ished, and who were an extremely important part of her life. Jane also loved to travel, astonishing many with her zest for life and con- tinued activities into her early 80s. Known for her grace and her wit, Jane was a good friend and admired by all who knew her. She wished us to say on her behalf, Its been very nice lovely. Ive enjoyed my life and hope that all of you can do the same. Many thanks to all the friends and caregivers, especially from St. Elizabeth, Ac- claim Health, and CCAC who gave so much assistance to Mum during this past year.
