The film follows linguist Ian Macken- zie as he tracks the last true nomadic hunting and gathering people on earth the Penan of Bor- neo. As industrial logging destroys their forest habi- tat, their way of life and language is quickly dis- appearing. Mackenzie has spent years compiling the first dictionary of the Penan language, which is a window into an entire- ly different way of seeing the world. The film was aired in part on CBCs The Nature of Things and won the Grand Prize at the 2008 Banff Film Festival and Honourable Mention at the 2008 Plan- et in Focus Film Festival. Gregg, who was raised in Nassagaweya, will be on hand to discuss the film following the screening. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free and donations are wel- come. John F. Ross wins Rockwood high school students that attend John F. Ross in Guelph have plenty to be proud of this week. The school raised $59,340 to buy mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa. That is more than any other high school, college or university in the country, making them the winners of the Spread the Net Stu- dent Challenge featured on CBCs Rick Mercer Report. Mercer was at the school on Monday taping for the segment that will air on March 17. Together, students across the country raised a total of $273,130, which buys 27,300 bed nets to prevent the spread of malaria, a disease carried by mos- quitoes that kills 3000 African children every day. One bed net can protect one or more chil- dren for up to five years. Spread the Net is aiming to raise 500,000 bed nets. For more information or to donate, visit www. spreadthenet.org. Old fire hall demol- ished The old fire hall on Alma St. was demol- ished this week to make way for construction of a new 12,035 square foot medical facility. It will house the East Welling- ton Family Health Team (EWFHT) and health related businesses, such as a dental office, phar- macy, chiropractor, etc. Coldpoint Holdings will begin construction soon, with completion expected next fall. Last Sunday, fitness instructor and personal t rainer Ann Mammoliti celebrated 20 years of business in the village, helping the community achieve bet- ter health and physical fitness. About 30 people attended the anniversary celebration at Rockmosa Community Centre. Mammol i t i s t a r t e d out with her little ghetto blaster teaching hi-low aerobic classes twice a week. The very first class was at Rockwood Cen- tennial Public School, but all the rest have been at Rockmosa. She took this step because she saw a real demand for com- munity based fitness. While teaching classes at the YMCA in Guelph, many people told her they would like to see some- thing in Rockwood. Over 50 people showed up for that first class at the school. Since then, Mammoliti has offered an ever ex- panding variety of fitness classes, keeping up with the times and trends. She has earned several certifi- cates over the years and is now a qualified personal trainer. The spring ses- sion at Rockmosa is set to begin March 24 and runs until May 29. Classes are offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings and include cho ices o f sk ipp ing drills, resistance train- ing, muscle conditioning, stretching and flexibility, agility courses, kickbox- ing, stability ball and the new craze Zumba, which incorporates Latin dance. Mammoliti says the last 20 years have flown by; When I started, I didnt know how long it would last, but its been great from the beginning and I hope to keep it going for a long time to come, she says, Rockmosa is my second home, and I thank all those who came here to celebrate with me today. She has seen friendships develop in her classes, which are very different than in a gym atmosphere; Some people have been coming here for the entire 20 years, some on and off, and some now bring their grown kids. She would like to see more men get involved, and suggests that now is a good time to get in better shape for summer sports like golf, which she says reduces the chance of injuries. In addition to classes, Ann offers one-on-one personal training, small group training, or even bridal boot camp.
