The Park is not a busi- ness, but it would increase traffic through and to the downtown core if it was part of us. Wed like to do more things like Movies in the Park and things like summer and winter festivities that would bring more people out and that would benefit the entire downtown, Wilkes said, adding shed love to see boat rentals return to Fairly Lake. Whats the rush says Arnott By Frances Niblock Bill 150, the Green Energy Act and Green Economy Act, now pro- ceeding rapidly through second reading at Queens Park, should be called the Power Grab Act accord- ing to Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott who suggests the Liberals are pushing the legislation through quickly because they have something to hide. I also think that the government is trying to divert attention away from the economy in advance of the March 26 budget, Arnott said on Monday as the Opposition continued to question the Minister of Energy about the wide ranging legislation that af- fects 21 acts including The Building Code, Places to Grow Act, Greenbelt Act, Planning Act and Environ- mental Protection Act. Bill 150 is designed to make it easier to develop renewable energy pro- jects and create a culture of conservation. In an interview on Mon- day, Arnott repeated some of the comments that he made in the Legislature after the bill was intro- duced in late February. We asked that the bill be sent to a committee for a full discussion with pub- lic input after first reading. It is very unusual for such an important piece of legislation to be called for second reading debate right after it was intro- duced for the first time. Whats the rush? Arnott asked. He said the bill would give the Minister of Ener- gy new powers to allow for warrantless entry into businesses and there are concerns that the bill give the Minister new powers to circumvent normal pro- cesses, specifically with the development of wind- mill power. I expect and anticipate that municipalities will have concerns as well, but we havent had a chance to hear from them and it would have been better to hear from the public after first reading, he said, adding he hasnt had a lot of comments from con- stituents, but expects them once more details of the bill are known. The Government said that the legislation will fight climate change, cre- ate a green economy and create 50,000 jobs in three years, a number Ar- nott said apparently was pulled out of the air. It would seem to me that the Government is actively trying to divert attention away from the economy. We have a lot of questions and so far, no answers about the new powers the Minister will have when the bill passes, what he intends to do with them and why he needs them, Arnott said. Halton Regional Police Regional Fraud Unit has con- cluded a seven month fraud investigation resulting in char- ges against an Acton man. Halton Police began an in- vestigation into allegations that over a two year period of time, two Rockwood men invested over $155,000 into an alleged charitable event run by a com- pany known as Good Time Events Police said the owner of Good Time Events led the victims to believe their investment was going toward an event known as a Cardathon. A Cardathon was described as a large charity gaming event which promised a 50% return on the investors money. The even was to be held at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. When there was no progress in event scheduling, the appar- ent fraud was brought to the attention of the Halton Region- al Police Service. Detectives learned that a char- itable event called Cardathon had never been booked at the Rogers Centre, nor did the Rogers Centre have any know- ledge of Good Time Events. On March 3, Halton detec- tives arrested 32-year old Stephen Turkosz of Acton, and charged him with two counts of fraud over $5,000. To date no money has been paid back and there was never a return on the investments made, Police said. Anyone with information re- lated to this crime is asked to contact the Burlington Crim- inal Investigations Bureau at (905)825-4777 ext 5399 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) Acton man is charged with theft over $5,000 - police Suzuki praises Green Energy Act... government will intro- duce a Green Energy Act, Premier Dalton McGuinty promised to modernize the provinces energy transmission grid to accommodate renew- able energy sources and to expand the use of solar, wind, hydro, bio- mass, and biogas. In the process, according to Pre- mier McGuinty, the move would help generate in- vestment and create more than 50,000 jobs over the next three years. Governments such as Germanys already have a considerable head start when it comes to renew- able energy, and even the U.S. is becoming a world leader in clean-energy technology. It would be great if this latest move by the Ontario govern- ment encouraged other Canadian politicians to get in on the act not just for the sake of clean air, land, and water, but for the sake of keeping our economy strong as well. Continued from Page 2 Continued from Page 1 There are so many people in town who dont even know where Prospect Park and Fairy Lake are and that is just a sin. To me, its just a gold mine of hubs that could be used and the more we can have happening in the Park, the more people will visual- ize what the downtown has to offer. Town Council received the request from the BIA and sent it to staff for a report. Mr. and Mrs. Bill McGilloway are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Cara Leanne McGilloway to Jason Robert Macpherson. Wedding to take place on June, 2009.
