The bluegrass and country performers will once again get the place hop- ping, thanks to the Goody Two Boobs team that will walk in the 2009 Weekend to End Breast Cancer bene- fitting the Campbell Family Institute at the Princess Mar- garet Hospital. Maggie and Kelly Hold- en, Will Cowan, Colleen Ens, and Jennifer Cameron make up the team that will join thousands of men and women in Toronto on Sep- tember 12 and 13 to walk 60 km to raise funds for womens cancer research, treatment and support pro- grams. Each walker has to raise at least $2,000, for a team total of $10,000. Every year we try to find creative ways to give back to the community with the fundraising events, says Ens. What better way than a night out with good music, good food and good fun? This year, shopping will be added to the fun. Earlier the same day, the team is host- ing a community market at Rockmosa, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any business or in- May 9th benefit and dance features return of Good Brothers Band dividual can rent a table for the day to sell goods, arts or crafts or promote business. Last years event was a great success, with 250 at- tending, raising almost $4000 for the cause. It was a ball, says Ens, The place was just hopping. In fact, the Good Bothers (Bruce, Brian and Larry) enjoyed Rockwoods community spirit so much, they are com- ing back for more. The Good Brothers formed a bluegrass, country and gos- pel band in 1973, and has since won eight Junos and were inducted into the Can- adian Country Hall of Fame in 2004. Doris Ens, Colleens mother, has been friends with the brothers for years, so she asked for their help in putting on a great party for a great cause. They generously donated their time and tal- ent, and will do so again this year, leaving only the back- up musicians to be paid from ticket sales. Ens continues to be im- pressed by the generosity and giving spirit of the Rockwood area community. Township Council agreed to waive the rental fees for the community centre again this year. The Rockwood and District Lions are donating bar service and tips. They in- vited Ens and the team to sell tickets at their recent Open House and at their annual Lions Pancake Breakfast on April 19 at Rockmosa. Their generosity is con- tagious, says Ens, They always give back to the community without their support, this would be dif- ficult. Last year, Doris ap- proached every Rockwood merchant and every one of them gave items for prizes or catering, and this year looks just as positive. Shes a real go-getter, say Ens about her mother, Non-stop, high energy an optimist. An- other crucial helper behind the scenes is Grace Nellis, who volunteers her time and talent in creating all the post- ers and tickets. With one in nine women diagnosed with breast can- cer in their lifetime, it is hard to find someone who has not been affected some- how by the disease. Add to that all the women who have been diagnosed with other related cancers over 8000 new cases in Canada in 2007, including cervical, endometrial, and ovarian so The Weekend to End Breast Cancer has added these to its list of cancers to fight. Ens lost her closest friend to cervical cancer 15 years ago: Survivorship goes beyond losing someone you love it goes to sup- porting others who are going through the challenge of cancer or loss. This years Its All Good event will be bittersweet for Ens, as she lost her father, Ben, last fall. He was a great support to the team and even sang some Johnny Cash tunes with the Good Brothers last year. We will carry on in his memory, she says. For tickets, call Doris at (519) 856-9419 or pick them up at the Lions Pancake Breakfast. To book a table at the market, call Maggie at (519) 940-9608.
