Karen BinchM.A. By Rick Bonnette Mayors Corner This Saturday, March 28 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., Earth Hour will be celebrated around the world. Earth Hours objective is to increase public awareness of the need to take action against climate change. With unanimous Council sup- port, the Town will once again join other communities around the world in celebrating Earth Hour. Last year, about 10 mil- lion Canadians participated. In 2008, our community made Earth Hour a success by decreasing energy use by 9.4%, ranking the Town fourth among other GTA municipal- ities. This demonstrated our communitys commitment to protecting the environment, and showed that it is possible to take meaningful local ac- tion against climate change. Everyones participation is im- portant to making this years Earth Hour a success. Earth Hour participation is volun- tary, fun and informative. To celebrate Earth Hour: Register for Earth Hour at www.EarthHourCanada. org. Share your ideas about how you will be participating and enter into a draw to win valuable energy-efficiency prizes by e-mailing the Office of Sustainability at damians@ haltonhills.ca. Turn off unnecessary lights, without compromising safety and security. Attend a free and fun Star Gazing Party at Cedarvale Community Centre in George- town, on Saturday, March 28 between 8:30pm and 10pm. Space is limited, so please RSVP with the Office of Sus- tainability at 905.873.2601 ext. 2290 or at jennifers@hal- tonhills.ca. Change your inefficient light bulbs to efficient CFL light bulbs. Turn down the thermo- stat. Avoid operating major ap- pliances during Earth Hour. Enjoy a candlelit dinner with family and friends. Businesses can promote Earth Hour, offer special Earth Hour meals, turn off unneces- sary lights, avoid operating major appliances, and offer candlelit dinner service. So, dont be afraid of the dark. Remember to turn off your lights and reduce energy. Be creative, have fun, and stay safe. * * * * Now that the snow looks like it is finally disappearing, you must have noticed the amount of unsightly litter along our streets and sidewalks, and in the parks. Councillor Jane Fogal, Chair of the Litter Free Committee, wants to give noti- fication that the Halton Hills 20 Minute Makeover will be held on Friday, April 17. Business- es, institutions, and schools are all asked to take 20 minutes out of their day to do a quick clean up of their immediate neigh- bourhoods. Last year we had 100% school participation and hopefully this level of success will be repeated. The Halton Hills Community Wide Clean Up will be held on Saturday, April 18. The focus of this clean up is on public property throughout the town. Volunteer groups, families or individuals are asked to register for these events and arrange for free gloves and garbage bags by calling the Towns Works Department at 905 873 2601 ex 2610 * * * * On behalf of Council, I welcome the following new business to Acton: Body Movement Therapeut- ics * * * * Keeping it real! Continued from page 1 and the unfinished work is valued at approximately $177,000. Town treasurer Ed DeSousa said they are working with the company that holds the bond for the work to determine how to proceed to complete the work. De- Sousa said it is rare for a situation like this to occur and it might be a sign of the economic times. Town engineer Chris Mills questioned the suggestion that tough economic times played a role in Al-Paks demise. We dont know the specifics around it. Given the amount of municipal work, though, that they did have on their books, it would be hard to explain how the eco- nomic climate impacted or created this problem the majority of their jobs are with municipalities and usually municipalities are pretty good about paying their bills, Mills said on Monday, adding the Town only had one uncompleted contract with Al-Pak. The project was marred by de- lays last summer and fall, due in part to rainy weather that threw off the construction schedule. Mills said the financial circum- stances of Al-Pak played no role in the delays. The work still to be completed includes a final layer of asphalt and restoration of lawns, driveways and curbs. Mills said the Town has sever- al options to get the job finished including having the bonding company recommend a contractor or re-tendering the work. The telephone at Al-Paks Mil- ton office is no longer in service. Halton Police are inves- tigating a break and enter at a garage on Silvercreek Drive, in Halton Hills, which resulted in the loss of Crossbows and arrows. Sometime between 12am and 4:30am, on March 18, culprits entered an attached garage on Silvercreek Drive, using the garage door opener which they located in the victims un- locked vehicle parked in the driveway. Police said that once inside the gar- age, the suspects removed two crossbows and num- erous arrows. Entry into the victims home was not gained or attempted. Halton Police are re- minding the public to lock their vehicles at all times and keep any valuables out of sight so thieves are not tempted. They are continuing to investigate this theft.
