NEW Newstand Price 40 + GST Earth Hour a success says the Town By Frances Niblock Star gazing, candlelit dinners, unplugged elec- tronic equipment, lower thermostats and reduced energy consumption marked Saturday nights second annual Earth Hour celebrations in Halton Hills as local citizens joined those around the world in increasing awareness about decreasing energy use. Halton Hills Hydro reports a community wide reduction of 7.5 per cent from a kilowatt hour consumption point of view, down from 9.4 per cent last year. The reduction in this years Earth Hour would be the equivalent of taking approximately 4,700 houses off the (power) grid for one hour, said Halton Hills Hydros chief Operating Officer Art Skidmore said on Wednesday. A typical house uses 985 kilowatt hours of energy per month Skidmore said, add- ing that another way to look at the Earth Hour savings is that the reduction of that one hour could power 6.5 homes for a month.
