Dated at the Town of Oakville April 3 2009. Scouts to plant trees in program Acton Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts will help plant 3,000 trees on Satur- day, April 18 as part of the national Scoutrees for Canada program. The area commissioner of the Greater Halton Area, Debbie Mac- Pherson, says that the 3,000 trees would be part of the millions of trees planted by Scouts across Canada this year. The program of Scoutree Canada is designed to give all mem- bers of Scouting the opportunity to demonstrate their concern for Can- ada in a practical way. All participants in the program are to receive practical training in con- servation and reforestation to ensure the trees will be planted correctly. Each participant will be expected to plant between 25 and 50 trees. Before April 18, Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts will seek support from the community. Scoutrees for Canada is also a fundraising project for Acton Scouting. Each household will only be contacted by one Scout, said Mac- Pherson. We hope that people will remember this when they are asked to participate. Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. Funds raised this year will be used to help further Scouting in the com- munity. Some of the money will be used to support international pro- grams of Scouts Canada designed to help Scouts in developing countries learn practical skills and trades. Chamber opposes legislation on replacement Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce is asking business owners , em- ployees and consumers to let their MPs know that legislation restricting the use of replacement work- ers by federally regulated employers during a strike would be devastating to the economy. The economy is taking a battering. Each day we hear that some sector of the economy is struggling to keep pace, avoid layoffs and evade the devastation to families and commun- ities across the country that this downturn is bring- ing, the Chamber says. One has to ask. Is this the time to enact legis- lation that could bring a faltering economy to its knees? ask the Chamber. This could be the result of the passage of legisla- tion or the adoption of precedent-setting motions- by the House of Commons that would restrict the use of replacement workers by federally-regulated em- ployers during a strike, the Chamber maintains. The services provided by federally-regulated employers are essential to keeping our businesses- and the nations economy working. That is why Parliament has acted in the past to legislate the end to work stoppages in federally-regulated in- dustries, as was the case in 2007 during a labour dispute in the railway sec- tor. In the event of a strike, it would not take long for the impact of companies providing transportation, telecommunications and financial services having to shut down to be felt by the thousands of busi- nesses and millions of Canadians who depend upon them in every com- munity across Canada.
