As a result of overwhelm- ing participation in our Blue Box and GreenCart pro- grams Halton residents sent 27,448 less tonnes of waste to the landfill in 2008, said Gary Carr, Haltons Regional Chair. The Region is now diverting just over 60 percent of residential waste away from the landfill and with increased waste diversion opportunities residents can continue to make a real dif- ference. Tire Amnesty Day Upcoming waste diversion opportunities include: Tire Amnesty Day Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Halton Waste Management Site, 5400 Regional Road 25, Milton. Residents can drop-off up to eight passenger vehicle tires (rims included), free of charge. Commercial vehicle, truck and tractor tires cannot be accepted. On Tire Am- nesty Day, Halton Region also coordinates a food drive to support food banks within the community. Residents are encouraged to make a dona- tion of non-perishable food items or cash. In spring 2008, Halton residents dropped off 3,260 tires free of charge during Tire Amnesty and donated 580 kilograms of food and $1,177 to local food banks. Tires are accepted all year (up to five per year per house- hold) at the Container Station for a small fee. Tires are not accepted in the landfill and are not collected with regular garbage or bulk. Environment Day Environment Day as part of the Town of Halton Hills Earth Day Event is on Sat- urday, April 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Robert C. Austin Operations Cen- tre, 11620 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown. Residents can drop off household hazardous waste such as paint, motor oil, cleaners and household batteries; tires (up to eight residential passenger ve- hicle tires (rims included); electronics such as comput- ers, stereos, phones, TVs and DVD players; reusable items such as clothing, linens, paired shoes, kitchenware, toys, useable electronics, and undamaged furniture. Blue Boxes will be avail- able (one Blue Box per household, proof of residency is required) and backyard composters can be purchased for $15 (taxes included) while quantities last. Lawn and garden prizes will be given out while quantities last as part of a public education and awareness raising program sponsored by Partners for Naturally Green. Special Waste Drop-off Days Halton Region is holding six Special Waste Collection Drop-off Days for residents to safely dispose of house- hold hazardous waste such as paint, motor oil, cleaners and household batteries and electronics such as comput- ers, stereos, phones, TVs and DVD players at no cost.
