William Roberts, Town Clerk Town of Halton Hills Dated this 16th day of December, 2009. Beware of scammers While most people this time of year are busy mak- ing a list and budgeting for Christmas shopping, many have opened their mind and hearts in a more caring and giving way for the holiday season. Also at this time of year, scammers are ramping up their efforts to take advantage of your giving nature. Con-artists tend to increase their efforts during the holi- day season and are constantly fi ne tuning the pitch they make trying to separate you from your hard earned cash. With this in mind, Wellington OPP want to remind you to be cautious with anyone asking for money over the phone. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre (Phonebusters) was established in January 1993, and is jointly operated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Competition Bureau Canada. The CAFCC is a national call centre where victims can report fraud complaints. The information is used to assist in investigations, like the emergency or Grandparent scam that has been around for years, and there has been a marked increase in the number of complaints in the last two months. In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from con-artist claiming to be one of his or hers grandchildren. The caller goes on to say that they are in some kind of trouble, usually a car accident, need money to return for a Christmas visit, or even bail money and need money immediately. A typical call can go something like this: Con-artist: Hi, Grandma/Grandpa Victim: Hi. Con-artist: Do you know who this is? Victim: John? Con-artist: Yeah. Victims dont verify the story until after the money has been sent as the caller specifi cally asks that they do not want other relatives to know what has happened by asking Can you please help me? Im in jail (or in the hospital / or in some type of fi nancial need). But dont tell Dad. He would kill me if he found out, please sent the money ASAP. Im scared. Wanting to help their grandchild, the victim sends money by a money transfer company such as Money Gram or Western Union. Variations on the scam exist with an old neighbour, or friend of the family but pre- dominantly the emergency scam is directed toward the grandparents as they tend to be more trusting and want to help. ROCKWOOD PARADE A CROWD PLEASER: Thousands of people lined the streets of Rockwood last Thursday for the 17th annual Parade of Lights that featured farm equipment festooned with Christmas decorations and holiday lights. - Rebecca Ring photo LEGION NEWS By James Hayes P.R.O. BRANCH NO. 197 Santas Visit Santa and his many helpers hosted the chil- drens Christmas Party at the branch last Sunday. Before Santa arrived, Chester the Clown enter- tained the children and parents with his balloon toys and magic show. As always we, and Santa, are grateful for the fi ne job done every year by Rhona and Jim Thorn- hill, John Dunn, Peggy Harris and all of Santas helpers who sorted and distributed the gifts. The work of John McNabb, John Wagg and J im Thornhill in the kitchen all helped to make this special day a success. Before Santa left for the North Pole, he asked me to tell the parents of children who were un- able to attend that he has left a gift for them with the stewards. Please call and make arrangements to pick your childs gift up as soon as possible, there will be a cut-off date- please dont miss it.
