Downtown Acton and the Acton East Plaza and arena were filled with people to celebrate the Olympic Torch coming through Acton last Saturday. It was an event that we will long remember and hold dear to our hearts. The phrase Acton Proud was coined in 1997 by our own Mayor Rick Bonnette as a campaign slogan to build the Acton Arena. Acton is still proud today as we came together as a community to celebrate our heritage and country. Downtown Acton was a hub of activity as early as 8:00 a.m. last Saturday morning. People were waiving their flags, spon- taneously singing Oh Canada, hugging each other and yes, I even saw people crying. It truly was a moving experience. Our annual Old Fashioned Christmas started right after the torch left Acton. There was syn- thetic ice to skate on compliments of Wayman Harten, Synthetic Ice Solutions. The road hockey tournament was a huge success. Four teams entered from Acton Minor Hockey and the champions were Acton Tire Stop. We plan on making this an annual event and are looking to expand and have more teams participate. The tour- nament ended with an exhibition game of the coveted Weiner Cup. This was just an exhibition game, if you want to see the real deal go to the Acton High School parking lot on Boxing Day at 10:00 a.m. You will see some exciting road hockey between two rival teams; The Sabres and The Caballeros. This Boxing Day Special has been taking place for 27 years. People enjoyed the horse and carriage rides with Santa as well as making gingerbread houses at the Acton Town Hall Centre. There was entertainment for all to enjoy including the Ac- ton Citizens Band, Son Rise, Georgetown Choral Society, Ac- ton High School Swing Band and the Acton Air Cadets. Thank you for coming out on such a cold, wintery day. Dont forget you still have one more shopping day until Christ- mas! So come to downtown Ac- ton were you can find something for everyone! We have over 80 shops, restaurants and services for your convenience. Remember to Shop Local Shop Smart it does pay! Looking for something to do as a family on New Years Eve? Come to the Acton Town Hall Centre located at 19 Willow Street North (behind Godfathers Pizza) for Family Fun Night New Years Eve Celebration featuring three rooms of entertainment. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with proceeds going to the Acton Town Hall Centre.
