Province to change fall report cards By Frances Niblock As long as parents get a clear picture of how their child is doing in school, Halton District School Board trustee Jerry Ock- enden doesnt care what the report is called, or exactly when it is issued. The province intends to eliminate the fall report card in favour of a formal progress report to be given out before parent-teacher interviews. Changes to the report stress learning skills rather than marks in an attempt to get con- sistent grading across Ontario. Ontario teachers unions think the fall report should be eliminated because it comes too early in the school year for teachers to make sound assessments of their students. Propon- ents of fall report cards said they keep parents in the loop and can quickly fl ag developing issues or problems. Ockenden said if you look at the unions argu- ments about the fall report card being too soon, there is some sense to that. I think the important thing is that parents are kept informed on what their kids are doing. All weve had is a memo from the Education Min- ister saying a fall progress report wont assign a mark but will indicate how a student is doing - very well, well or with diffi- culty, Ockenden said on Sunday. He said he has not had any complaints from Ac- ton parents about the current three report cards a year system. The province said that the new progress report card has been tested as a pilot project in 60 schools and nine school boards and the results of the pi- lots confirmed that a redesigned fall progress report card will benefit students, parents, teach- ers and principals. Ockenden said hell question the proposed new reporting system at the Boards January 6 meeting. Now we are well into the holiday season, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and will have a healthy New Year. We will be back to our regular hours next week. We are looking forward to the next dinner Real and his committee has planned for us. It will be all things Chinese. The Art class is taking a break for the holidays and classes will restart on Wednesday, January 13 at 1 p.m. There was a full bus for the annual Tour of Lights on Thursday evening. Pat Graham was our volunteer driver, and Pat Robinson our guide. The 1 hour tour took them through Acton, Georgetown, Nor- val and the Glen. Everyone said how wonderful the dis- plays were. On our return we all enjoyed hot cider, coffee, and goodies, served by Mary Walsma and Con- nie Fix. Alex and Andrew Hilson entertained us with Christmas music. Alex played our piano, and his brother accompanied him on the key board. Every- one enjoyed joining in and singing the familiar songs. This evening would not be possible if it was not for the generosity of Ted Tyler who provided the bus, and the two Pats who donated their time. Thanks every- one! This is a Christmas tradition, open not only of members of the Centre but everyone 55 plus and their care givers. The Friday lunch group provided a wonderful Christmas turkey dinner for over 50 people on Friday, December 18. These ladies work very hard to provide a variety of tasty lunch all year round. Lennora Mc- Kinnon will be retiring in the New Year. She moved to Belwood several years ago, and I am afraid its not Worth the drive to Acton during the winter. Thanks for all your hard work and inspired lunches over the years, Lennora. The Fri- day lunch committee is always looking for help. If you are able to volunteer a few hours on a Friday mor- ning (even if its only one Friday a month), please let the person at the front desk know, and they can pass your name and phone number on to the appropri- ate person. The next lunch will be a Pot Luck on Fri- day, January 8. All members born in either December or January are invited to the Birthday Tea on Tuesday January 12 at 2 p.m. You should re- ceive a phone call inviting you and a guest early in the New Year. On January 8, there will be a sign up sheet at the front desk for anyone in- teresting in learning how to create a painted Fridge Magnet using a toothpick. Pauline Barlow will be teaching us, and the sign up sheet will only be there until January 22, as only 20 people can be accom- modated. It is on a first come basis. There will be a charge of $5 to cover the cost of materials. Dobbie Frizzell changed our Canadian Maple Leaf Flag to a beautiful new one in honour of the Olym- pic torch running past the Centre last week. It cer- tainly fl ys very proudly in its new position, thanks to Dobbie. In the New Year, Mar- garet Anderson and Donna Rowley will be phoning people to ask them if they would consider taking a position on our Board. Sev- eral board positions will be renewed this year, and we will be holding elections at our A.G.M in February. If you feel you would like to consider one of the pos- itions please call Margaret and let her know. Sheila Foster asked me to mention that when you start putting away your unbreak- able Christmas decorations in the New Year, the craft group has a recycling pro- ject in mind and would love to take them off your hands. Perhaps you purchased new ones at the great Box- ing Day sales, or are down sizing. You can drop them off at the Centre Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Just a little reminder, the 2010 membership is due before the end of 2009. On Friday, December 18 Joan Morriss name was drawn for the 50/50. Joan won $274 just in time for Christmas.
