The Tanners played four games in a two-day, round robin style format, where they beat the North London Eagles and the Hespeler Shamrocks, tied the Guelph Jr. Storm and lost to the Innisfil Winter- hawks. Five points was enough for them to finish the round robin in third place and move on to the finals where they faced off against the Richmond Hill Stars, vying for the bronze metal. It was an evenly matched game, tied up until the last three minutes but despite the teams incredible effort, as well as excellent goal tending, the Tanners were unable to come back from a late goal that put the Stars ahead and they lost the game 4-2. A great ac- complishment overall. The New Year brought better luck to the Novice Tanners with two wins in two days. They travelled to Arthur on January 2 to take on the Vipers and managed a 4-1 win. The first period was scoreless, and just when it looked like the second would remain the same, Daniel Nascimento scored with only a minute and half left, assisted by Caleb Downs. The third per- iod brought the Tanners three more, well deserved goals by each of Michael Holmes, Tristan Wight and an empty netter by Nascimento. Downs was given another assist on Holmes goal and Spencer Booth on Nascimentos goal. The Vipers only managed to get one goal by Tanners goalie Se- bastian Woods, who was spectacular in between the pipes once again. The next day the Tanners hosted the Flamborough Sabres and earned another 6-2 win. House League Hockey Atom BB Tanners earn silver medal at tourney Monday, December 28 marked the first game of the 43rd Annual Hespeler Shamrock Olympics for the Acton Tanners Atom BB team which ended in a final fight to the finish just two days later. Up first were the Milton Winterhawks and the Tan- ners. The Tanners showed real grit and determination to establish themselves as the squad to beat. The first period yielded no goals from either side and al- lowed the talents of net minder Andrew Wright to shine. Unfortunately to- wards the end of the second period, Milton netted two quick goals. With two minutes left in the second, forward Marshall Harkins, with an assist from Garrett MacMillan, put the Tanners on the score board. The third period was a real nail- biter where neither team was able to score and the Tanners, despite playing awesome hockey, werent able to tie it up. The final score was 2-1. Next up was Belle Riv- er and the Tanners showed their stuff with a 6-1 win. Harkins and MacMil- lan along with Cameron Hampton, Brenden Geim, Nick Percy, Evan Pike and defenceman Jake Molinaro all went on the game sheet, but the entire team aptly demonstrated their skill to deliver the win. Day two of the tour- nament had the Tanners f a c i n g t h e H e s p e l e r Shamrocks, where again, the Tanners skated away with a 6-1 win. This game saw Alec MacCallum put four goals on the board with assists from team mates Harkins, Hampton, Geim and defensemen John McKee and Nicholas Ratchford. That afternoon the squad faced the Cambridge Hawks where Sean Caruso netted the first goal of the game early in the first per- iod. The Hawks went on to score two early goals in the second until the Tan- ners came back to tie with less than two minutes left. Thanks to the solid defence afforded by Carter Kavan- er, Molinaro, Ratchford, John McKee and Caruso during the last period, the Tanners went on to score two quick goals with less than two minutes left in the third period. The team was now all set for the final against Milton. The final game of the tournament was definite- ly a heartbreaker for the Tanner squad. The second period saw Acton put the first goal on the score board thanks to Hampton, and assisted by Harkins. Milton tied it up and the third period was scoreless which sent the game into overtime. After almost five additional minutes of over- time play, Milton scored to win the tournament. It was a tough loss for the Tanner squad who played their hearts out and fought a great game. This caps off a sensa- tional season for the Atom BB Tanners. They are cur- rently in third place in their division with 16 wins, 6 losses and 4 tiesa fabu- lous season for all. Come and cheer them on as they begin their playoff session. Check the Tanners website for dates and times.
