Protect your vehicle Ontario is providing consumers with improved protections when they buy or lease new and used cars. The provinces new Mo- tor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 (MVDA) that came into force on January 1 re- quires dealers to: Disclose a vehicles true condition and history before consumers sign contracts. Adopt all-inclusive pricing when advertising new and used vehicles, including freight, dealer preparation and other mis- cellaneous charges. Consumers will also be able to cancel a contract within 90 days if a dealer fails to disclose certain key items such as accur- ate odometer-readings, the correct year or model, and the previous use of the vehicle. Improved protection from the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund, with an increase from $15,000 to $45,000 in coverage, will also al- low consumers to recover deposits should a dealer- ship goes out of business. The Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 is ad- ministered by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) on behalf of the Ontario gov- ernment. Sales of new motor vehicles have generally been increasing since the beginning of 2009, fol- lowing a sharp decline at the end of 2008. The number of new mo- tor vehicles sold increased in eight provinces in Oc- tober 2009 compared to September 2009. Acton Library - a warm welcoming place By Frances Niblock As planned, the Acton library will be a warm welcoming place with a two-sided fireplace, a self- service checkout option and relaxed comfortable atmosphere. The public will be asked to comment on the fine de- tails the proposed paint colours and finishes at a public meeting on Janu- ary 28 at the River Street branch, but Geoff Cannon, the librarys manager of public services, provided a preview. The feel that we are trying to get is to continue with the whole idea that we were doing from the build- ing shape. Sort of bringing the outside inside, so to speak. Theres going to be a neutral palette on the floors and walls so they are timeless, Cannon said on Monday. We want to use paint to highlight different areas to punch it upwe want to make the library fun, interesting, relaxing and comfortable, depending on what area of the library you are in, he said, adding they would try to incorpor- ate parts of Actons history in the interior possible something with leather to highlight the tannery. Its going to be a very comfortable branch as well because the idea is that this is a community hub, not just a warehouse of books and magazines and CDs. It is a place where people can come and have a cup of coffee and relax and open up their laptop, or read a book or magazine that sort of combination, Can- non said. The branch will include a larger teen area with seating following a recom- mendation from a survey of local high school stu- dents. A radio frequency identification system will allow patrons automatically checkout, if they want, by scanning their library card and the material they want to take home. We want a warm, wel- coming living room feel but it has to be functional as a library, Cannon said, invit- ing everyone interested to the community open house when the architect and interior de- signer will be available for comments and questions. As well, a recreation and parks staffer is expected to detail landscaping plans for the facility, especially at a proposed plaza area located where the existing library, which will be demolished, now sits. Cannon said it is not too late to make changes and if there is a very strong reac- tion to something proposed by the architect or interior designer, they have time to makes changes. For anyone unable to at- tend the open house, the architects and interior de- signers sample boards will be on display at the River Street branch. The project is on a very tight timeframe to meet funding requirements. The cost of the $3.5-million, 9000-square-foot facility is being split between the Federal, provincial and mu- nicipal governments. The Town expects to go to tender in February or early March, and break ground with the spring thaw. Architects rendering of the new library McGuinty government strengthens motor vehicle sales sector.
