The deadline for sub- missions is April 8, 2010. Participating schools will receive a certificate and pennant to display in their school. Over the last three years, more than 3,000 schools have pledged to do more than 6,500 healthy activities through the program. Halton celebrates Crime Stoppers month I t s a t ime when Crime Stoppers pro- grams around the world can highlight the suc- cess they have had in combating crime and keeping communities safe. Crime Stoppers Month has been celebrated an- nually since officially being proclaimed in September 1986 at the Crime Stoppers Inter- national conference in Edmonton, Alberta. Canadas Prime Min- ister Stephen Harper has acknowledged Crime Stoppers Month in a letter which commends the staff and volunteers associated with Crime S toppers p rograms across the country. C r i m e S t o p p e r s Month is an opportun- ity to raise awareness of this successful inter- national effort, which has developed a respect- ed and strong presence in Canada with more than one hundred com- munity-based programs and over two hundred thousand cases cleared, the letter states. P r i m e M i n i s t e r Harper also stated: Citizens who are alert and involved are key to ensuring that their neighbourhoods remain safe, friendly places in which to live and work. Crime Stoppers is a spe- cial partnership between these concerned individ- uals, the local media and police, that endeavours to solve and prevent crime in our commun- ities. Internationally Crime Stoppers is utilizing Crime Stoppers Month to focus attention on initiatives to combat crime involving human traffi cking and the con- tinuing efforts of Crime Stoppers to bring inter- national fugitives to justice. Crime Stoppers of Hal- ton will host a special ceremony on January 19 at the Halton Regional Police headquarters building to officially mark Crime Stoppers Month and release the programs annual statis- tics as well as unveiling a promotional poster to assist the guns and gangs unit.
