Quit smoking and win a car Halton will help people butt out Hal ton Region i s gearing up in the fight against cancer this month by partnering in the fifth Driven to Quit Challenge. An estimated 23,400 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 - 20,500 will die from the dis- ease. Cigarette smoking causes approximately 85 per cent of lung can- cers. We are proud to work with our local and provincial partners to participate in this years Driven to Quit Chal- lenge, said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. This initiative offers residents an extra incen- tive and support to be successful in their quit attempts. I challenge all adult smokers and to- bacco users in Halton to gear up to quit smoking in 2010. The Driven to Quit Challenge is a health promotion campaign that encourages Ontario adults who are daily smokers or tobacco users to make a quit attempt with the support of a buddy for the chance to win a hybrid car or other prizes. Friends and family members of smokers are encouraged to become a support buddy in the Challenge for their chance to win a buddy prize. This year, working together with the Hal- ton Region Cessation Community of Practice (CoP), the Region hopes to see 1,200 entrants in Halton. After heart disease and stroke, lung can- cer is the third highest cause of death in Halton Region, said Dr. Bob Nosal, Medical Officer of Health for Halton Region. The Driven to Quit Challenge, along with our Stop Smoking Clinic and other initia- tives, is an important part of our ongoing smoking cessation efforts. Since 2006, the Chal- lenge has been successful in motivating more than 101,000 entrants to get on the road to better health with the support of a buddy and motiv- ating prizes. In Halton, nearly 8,000 entrants have registered since the contest began. This year, a 2010 Ford Escape hybrid, two $5,000 vacation get- aways and seven regional prizes are among the prizes available. There are three ways to enter: online at www.Driv- enToQuit.ca by fax ing/mai l - ing a registration form (available from Halton Region) by calling Smokers Helpline at 1-877-513- 5333 The Challenge will have regular updates and quit tips on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ smokershelpline and on Twitter at www.twitter. com/driven2quit. Registration is open until February 28. Those who register by Janu- ary 31, will qualify for the early bird prize of a $1,000 MasterCard gift card. The Driven to Quit Challenge is hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Div- ision, with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and generous prize support from McNeil Consum- er Healthcare, a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson Inc. The Driven to Quit Challenge is presented in collaboration with local public health de- partments across the province. The RM Construction Atom AE Tanners finished off the regular season with a convincing win against Centre Wellington #2 with an 8-2 score, ending the season on a six game winning streak. Acton goals came from: Con- nor Fagan (2 goals, 2 assists), Cam Shoebridge (2g, 1a), Jake Case (2g), Tanner Canary (1g, 1a), Nathan Pines (1g), Ian Davies (2a), Dylan Vermeulen (1a), Jacob Caldwell (1a) and Cam Knight (1a). The boys played hard from start to finish, said Assistant Coach Mike Case. Owen Ferguson played solid in net making some key saves when the game was close. The Tanners started their first round of play-offs with a bang with 9-1 final vs. Erin/Hillsburgh. Fagan (3g), Shoebridge (3g), Knight (1g, 4a), Canary (1g, 2a), Case (1g, 1a), Vermeulen (a), Pines (a), Davies (a), Noah St. Denis (a) and Eric McCallum (a). We had a good game to start the OMHA playdowns. Owen played well in net making some key saves for us and we really started to put the puck in the net in the third period after a sluggish first and second period, said Coach Steve Caldwell. Riding a seven game winning streak in Dundas, the Tanners started off quickly with Fagan opening the scoring on a rebound after Knight had been stopped on a breakaway. Less than two minutes later after a wrap around attempt by Pines, Canary put it upstairs giving the Tanners a 2-0 lead heading into the second. Once again on a rebound, Pines scored, assisted by Canary and Davies. Dundas stormed back with two goals to make it a one goal game heading into the third period. With Dundas swarming Actons net and getting stellar goaltending from James Bursa, the Tanners got an unassisted marker from Case giving Acton some much needed breathing room. Final Score: Dundas 2, Acton 4. This was a tough game from the outset. James was outstanding in goal! We played a strong third period holding Dundas off the scoresheet, Caldwell said. Dundas out shot us by double, 33-16! We stole this one, we did have lots of hustle in the game, we scored when we had our chances, said Case. Next up for the Atom AE Tanners was yesterday (Jan. 20) in Hillsburgh, tonight in Dundas, Saturday at home (4 p.m.) vs. Dundas and Sunday at home (12:30 p.m.) vs. E/H.
