Town Digest Halton appointments Congrats to Regional/Acton Councillor Clark Som- erville who was acclaimed to another term as chair of Haltons health and social services committee. He will also sit on the budget review committee. Congrats as well to Regional/Georgetown Coun- cillor Jane Fogal who was unchallenged and again will be vice-chair of the administration and finance committee. She will also sit on the interview com- mittee and the budget review committee. Halton benchmarks Halton has the highest violent crime clearance rate of any Ontario municipality in the 2008 perform- ance benchmarking report that measures, shares and compares performances of Ontario municipalities to improve service delivery. Staff said that overall, Halton compares favourably for the measures reported in the Ontario Municipal- ity Benchmarking Iniative (OMBI). Some of the findings include: Haltons book value gross fixed income yield is 4. 4 per cent, higher than the OMBI median of 4.1 per cent The legal services cost per $1,000 of expendi- ture was $4.18 compared with the OMBI median of $2.91 Halton has 175 police staff per 100,000 popula- tion compared with 211 for the OMBI median 73 per cent of Haltons paved lane kilometres are rated good to very good compared to 64 per cent for the OMBI median Halton collects 1.23 tonnes of household waste compared to the OMBI median of 0.94 tonnes Halton has 176 regulated child care spaces (10 per cent of them subsidized) compared with the OMBI median of 147 (with 21 per cent subsid- ized) In Halton 10 per cent of children under 12 are from low-income families compared to the OMBI median of 16 per cent 951 people per 100,000 households are on social assistance on compared with 3,678 for the OMBI median Halton historically has had the lowest or one of the lowest number of cases of people social assistance staff said the number is influenced by predominately favourable demographic, social and economic conditions.
