Quality/Service/Price with 23 years experience Hat trick for Cutting Jessica Cutting had a hat trick as the Acton girls hockey team tied visiting St. Thomas Aquinas 3-3 in Halton Second- ary School Athletic Association play last Wednesday. Jessica is a great fore checker and was always in the zone and able to come up with the puck, said coach Shawn Brown, add- ing that Cuttings first goal was unassisted; Christine Bennett and Rebecca Woolford assisted on the second and Woolford and Chelsea Pronkewich assisted on the third. The Acton team is 1-5-1 on the season. They play an away game against Aldershot tomorrow (Friday) and face Corpus Chris- tie at home again on February 17. Acton hosts 40th annual Peewee tourney Last weekend marked the 40th anniversary of the Acton House League Annual Peewee Tourna- ment and to celebrate this milestone, the organiz- ers of the oldest running Peewee Tournaments in Ontario expanded the event to include 28 teams and over 400 players. The tournament featured 41 round-robin and three championship games in three divisions using ice surfaces at both the Ac- ton and Memorial arenas in Halton Hills. The John Toebes or J.T. Division, named after the late John Toe- bes who was president of the league, had 12 teams entered in two pools of six competing for the championship. When the round robin games were finished, the finals show- cased two teams both from Meadowvale. The first Meadowvale Scream- ing Hawks team shut out teams from Burlington and Peterborough before beating the Acton Fire- fighters team, while the second Screaming Hawks beat Actons Rotary Club and a team from Newmar- ket before clinching their spot in the finals against a team from Georgetown. To differentiate the two undefeated Meadowvale teams the home team wore white while the visiting team wore their black jerseys. It appeared both teams were familiar with each other as they played to a scoreless first period and exchanged goals in the second. In the third period, the visit- ing team scored two goals in a close fought battle to win the J.T. Division Championship with a 3 1 victory. The Bill Waites or B.W. Division had 10 teams entered in two pools of five teams and the finals showcased a team from Acton versus a team from Listowel. Actons Nova Training won two close games shutting out teams from Oakville and Orange- ville. To clinch their spot in the finals they won their third game against a team from Otonabee. The Listowel Cyclones beat a team from Orangeville before victories against Actons R/M Construc- tion team and Actons Rallis Burger. The Listowel team had visions of beating a third Acton team to hoist the B.W. Championship tro- phy, but the Nova Training team stood in their way. The Cyclones lived up to their name and took a 3 0 lead in the first period with three goals. Despite their best efforts, the Nova Training team couldnt get the puck past the Listowel net minder and a late goal in the third period sealed the 4 0 win and the B.W. Championship to Lis- towel. The third and final championship of the evening was the Select Division with six teams battling for their right to play in final game that featured the MacMillians Acton Chargers versus the Oakville Eagles. The Chargers beat teams from Wellington, Creemore and Erin/Hillsburgh while the Oakville team showed they were the team to beat shutting out teams from Glanbrook, Wellington and Erin/Hillsburgh. In the championship game, the Oakville team dominated much of the first period, but Actons goalie Bradley Karat kept his team in the game with some big saves. This did not deter the Eagles game plan as they kept up the pressure and were rewarded with two goals in the second period. Un- fortunately for Acton, the third period was much of the same with the Eagles denting the twine three more times. For the fourth game in a row, Oakvilles goalie recorded the shut- out and the Oakville Eagles are the Select Div- ision Champions. The Tournament Co- chairs Russell and Cathy Lee want to thank all the teams, coaches and play- ers for making the 40th anniversary the best one yet. Also, they would like to thank the many volun- teers who help make the tournament such a suc- cess. It takes a small army of people volunteering many hours of their time over a three-day period to make this tournament a suc- cess, for that the League and its Executive are truly grateful, said League President Ted Saelzer. with The New Tanner Sports PEEWEE POWER: Acton Charger Peewee Selects Randy Dales (11) shoveled fallen teammate Mason Coulighan at the Wellington net hoping the puck would follow. On February 2 they took on the Guelph Jr. Storm. Luke Miehm scored the first goal after a scram- ble in front of the Storm net just before the end of the first period. Nic Jones had the assist. T h e s e c o n d p e r i o d brought a little more ex- citement with another three goals for the Tanners. Mi- chael Holmes started it off early in the period on a Tan- ners power play, assisted by Daniel Nascimento. Less than a minute later, Caleb Downs scored a beauty, this one assisted by Holmes. The Storm scored shortly after that, but Dylan Palmer answered with less than a minute to go in the second, thanks to a beautiful pass in front of the net from line mate Stuart Macdonald, to end the period 4-1 Tan- ners. The action continued throughout the third period, including some excellent defensive plays, one in par- ticular by Spencer Booth. The third period saw one more goal for the Tanners, scored by Jones, with an as- sist going to Miehm, giving the Tanners a 5-1 win over the Storm. On February 6, the Tan- ners went to Schomberg to face the Red Wings for the first time. It was a real nail biter as the Red Wings scored the first two goals of the game. Nascimento put the Tanners on the board part way into the second, off a pass from Holmes. Five minutes later, Downs beat the Red Wings defence, got to the net and tied it up. Assists went to Nascimento and Holmes. The intense ac- tion continued into the third and the crowd was brought to their feet when Miehm received a pass from Kyle Spence and scored the game winning goal with just over five minutes left in the game. The Red Wings came on even stronger after that, but once again the Tanners defencemen, Booth, Joshua Hamilton, Declan Har- rison, Zachary Booth and Ryan McAskill, all played tough to keep the puck out of their end. Tanners goalie Sebastien Woods made a number of incredible saves throughout the game to keep the Red Wings at bay, giving the Tanners 3-2 vic- tory. The Tanners continue their road trip this Sunday as they take on the Beeton Stingers. The Acton Tanners Major Midgets were looking for a sweep of the Erin-Hillsburgh Devils in the Centre 2000 arena last Thursday. With only 12 skaters, the Tanners came out to play a good game of hockey and their efforts were rewarded with not having to spend a sin- gle minute in the penalty box. Unfortunately, it was Erin-Hillsburgh that emerged as the true victors in the game with a score of 3-1. Acton gave a valiant effort throughout three periods of play but only once was able to light up the scoreboard when Brandyn McCarthy scored the Tanners lone goal in the game. Once again, they had many great chances, but were unable to shake the Devils net minder from his post. Now out of the running for the OMHA title, the Major Midget team has its sights set on the Tri-County Playoffs where they open with a best- of-five series against the Woolwich Wolverines. Game schedule is still to be an- nounced. Midget Tanners defeated
