My name is Moreen S m i t h . I a m t h e new Acton Vil lage Constable. I have been a police offi cer for 20 years. The fi rst 14 years were spent working on the Toronto Police Service. My policing experience includes mounted horse patrols, foot patrol, traffi c enforcement and criminal investigations. The last 2 years with The Halton Police Service have been spent in the traffic unit curbing aggressive driving. So what would I like to accomplish as the Acton Village Constable? My goal is to continue the positive relationship that has been fostered wi th the youth of Acton. As well I would like to build a strong working relationship w i t h t h e s e n i o r s , businesses members and community groups. I would like to use this article as a means of answering any questions no matter what the topic. Possibilities range from how to become a police officer to preventing drunk drivers in our town. I feel that this is an amazing community and I am glad to be a part of it. I am new in this role. If you see me walking down your street please feel free to stop me and allow me to introduce myself. They found that some drivers still havent got the message. On February 3, offi cers observed a pick-up truck southbound on Trafal- gar Road, in Oakville. It was clear the driver of the vehicle was talking on his cell phone. Offi cers pulled in behind the male and activated their emergency lights. The driver was oblivious to the offi cers behind him and he continued to proceed. The driver was fi nally forced to stop at a red light, still not reacting to the offi cers behind him. The offi cers seized a moment to drive up beside the driver, with their lights still on and sitting right beside the vehicle, the driver still failed to acknowledge the police. A loud blast of the siren would fi nally get the attention of the driver, he rolled down his window, still on the phone, and of- fi cers asked him if he would hang up so they could pull him over. A ticket was issued. To date the Halton Regional Police Service has issued 70 Provincial Of- fence Notices under the Distracted Driver Legislation. In an emergency drivers may place emergency calls to the police, fire department and emergency medical services. If possible, drivers should pull off the road before making the emergency call. You can not use your hand-held cell phone or device while stopped in traffi c or at a red light. Your vehicle must be off the roadway or lawfully parked on a roadway, it cant be in motion and must not impede traffi c. Distracted drivers are a safety risk to themselves and others. The Halton Regional Police Service wants to re- mind you: Before you set your vehicle in motion hang up & buckle up. Dangers of driving with hand held electronic devices still lost on some
