Contact George Hunak 519.853.0812 ahha@sympatico.ca House League Hockey To the editor I would like to com- ment on the article printed on the back page (Com- munity Corner) of the January 21 edition of the Tanner entitled Skating on Thin Ice. The main message in the article ap- peared to be that the ice on Fairy Lake was not yet safe for any activities. This is not true. I have previously ad- dressed the issue of ice conditions on Fairy Lake in a Letter to the Editor in this paper two years ago in January 2008. This was in response to an incident where my fiancnd step- son were verbally harassed by a citizen who thought that they shouldnt have been on the ice because the Tanner had printed it was unsafe, despite the fact that the ice was in- deed over 10 inches thick where they were ice fish- ing. While I understand that there are many parts of the ice that are thin and there may even be open water, what people need to be educated about is the non-uniformity of ice, no matter how it looks in some areas. One should always proceed with ex- treme caution when on ice, and children should never be on the ice with- out a knowledgeable adult. We always check the ice thickness in regu- lar intervals with an auger until we are certain it is safe. By your own words in the January 21 article, the recommended minimum is four inches of ice for walking, six for a snow- mobile (which are both underestimated by some standards), and eight to 12 for a vehicle (interested persons can check the fol- lowing website for other ice safety tips: http:// www.redcross.ca/article. asp?id=2570&tid=024). Between Christmas and New Years 2009, a large portion of Fairy Lake had ice that was seven to eight inches deep, which, according to your article, is nearly thick enough to drive a vehicle onto. The actual state of the ice just does not match up with the misinformation in the article. Citizens should be aware that these are cautions only, and that no authority is actually monitoring the thickness of the ice on Fairy Lake (or at least no one is re- porting it). This means you cannot know if it is safe unless you check it or speak directly with someone who has. This does not mean the ice is unsafe. People who go through the ice do so because they are careless. This doesnt mean people cant safely enjoy one of our towns best assets doing fun, healthy, Canadian winter activities! Shelley Stewart PhD Student, University of Guelph Olympic Report with Linda Olson Vancouver Olympics Volunteer Hello I have been really enjoying the excitement that is building in the Richmond Olympic Oval. My team consists of eight volunteers who are rinkside during the speed skating races and prac- tises. Look for the light blue jackets at each corner of the rink, one of them is me. All the volunteers were given a ticket to the dress rehearsal for the Opening ceremony for last Wed- nesday night. We saw the perform- ance the way you saw it on TV, including the well known singers. It was a wonderful show and performed with perfection. We are all noticing, especially today, that the commuting time is longer and the crowds are here. You may wait for three or four trains just to get on at the major centres. Saturday is the first race at the Oval and the athletes are looking real- ly smooth and ready for the challenges ahead. I am off to Vancouver Island for the weekend to visit my family. A much needed rest after six days at over 12 hours each. I average over 10 km a day of walking alone. The building is huge. Keep watching and cheer for our Canadian Team, they have devoted their lives to this rigorous training and discipline. Oh, yes, the weather is about 8 degrees and rainy everyday.
