The RBC Sponsored Novice Acton Tanners advanced to the semi- final round of the OMHA playdowns where they face neighbouring rivals Erin-Hillsburgh Devils in a best-of-five series. The first game took place in Acton last Saturday with the Tanners early goal by Michael Holmes (assists went to Daniel Nasci- mento and Caleb Downs). That goal was matched by the Devils and the first per- iod ended with the teams tied 1-1. The Devils started the scoring in the second period, but the Tanners matched it with one of their own just as quickly, thanks to Nascimento off a set up from Holmes and Downs. Some hard work by the Tanners defence helped keep the Devils at bay for most of the per- iod, but they managed to get one more goal to end the second with the Dev- ils up by one with a score of 3-2. Both teams came out strong at the beginning of the third with Downs leading the scoring after deeking out the Devils goalie on a pass from de- fenceman Ryan McAskill. The scoring went back and forth between the evenly matched teams, with Nas- cimento earning another hat trick after two more beautiful goals (assists going to both Downs and Holmes). With just over five min- utes left in the game, the teams were tied 5-5, but the Devils managed to get the upper hand and score three more goals to end the first game of the series 8-5. The Novice Tanners travel to Erin this week for games two and three, then hopefully back to Acton this Saturday (March 6) for a fourth game. Novice in semi-finals By Frances Niblock A 4-1 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas ended the season for Acton High Schools girls hockey team. The squad started slow in Mon- days quarterfinal Halton Secondary School Athletic Association playoff game in Oakville. Christine Ben- nett scored Actons only goal with help from Jessica Cutting. The girls played really poorly and were down 3-0 at the end of the first period, and although they picked it up, they never recovered, t eacher /coach Shawn Brown said on Tuesday, Brown said the three Grade nine players on the team helped with the suc- cessful season that included a 9-2 rout of Burlington Central last week. Rebecca Woolford had a hat trick in that game and singles went to Kaylee Kearns, Savannah Muir, Christine Bennett, Jessica Cutting, Lauren Vermeulen and Justine McIntyre. Our girls were more hungry for the win in that game, Brown said, acknowledging that Bur- lington had a short bench in the must-win game. Southland Conference Track and Field Cham- pionship title in the past two years. Competing in the shot put , Andrews placed second, receiving the Silver medal, with a sea- son best throw of 14.73 metres. Stephen F. Austin will begin its outdoor sea- son on March 20 when it competes in the Dr. Pep- per Invitational Track and Field meet in Waco, Texas. Andrew is in her fourth year at Stephen F. Austin, majoring in Kinesiology and Secondary Educa- tion. She will return to SFA next fall and will be eligible to compete in the 2011 outdoor season as she was red-shirted during the 2008 outdoor season due to injury.
