Forty-seven members at- tended, which was down a little from last year. Perhaps that means everything is go- ing well, and there are no complaints, or the snow fall had something to do with it. President Mary Walsma welcomed and introduced Mayor Rick Bonnette, Terry Alyman, Director Recreation and Parks, Joy Thompson, Manager of Recreation Ser- vices, Councillors Jon Hurst, and Clark Somerville, Aaron Mathews, Facility Super- visor Acton Arena, Wendy Krever our co-ordinator, the present Board Members of the Centre and Bill Krever, CEO Better Health and Liv- ing. Mayor Rick congratulat- ed us on the many volunteer hours our members have contributed to the centre, and noted that without the volun- teers many things would not be possible. Terry Alyman thanked the board for taking care of business and thanked the outgoing board members and welcomed the incoming members. He spoke about the importance of the strategic plan for the senior centres of Halton Hills and how it will help provide guidance in planning for the future for seniors in our community. Pat Frizzell gave the finan- cial report for 2009. Wendy Krever thanked Jon Hurst for his hard work and commitment to the Ac- ton Seniors Centre as our liaison with Halton Hills Council. She mentioned Stephanie Frances has ac- cepted a full-time position with the City of Toronto, and Michelle Durham (who has been working temporarily as the administrative assistant) has been hired for position. She thanked Council for its support of the recommen- dation that funds from the EPC grant be used to allow the co-ordinator to work an additional day at the cen- tre. She mentioned how much everyone enjoyed the February dinner when we celebrated our own mini- Olympics, and thanked Jill and Real Tetreault and their committee for a job well done, especially the added bonus of George Hender- son entering with the torch, and the spontaneous singing of O Canada. A very proud moment! She thanked the volunteers and the out- going Board members Jill Tetreault, Pat Jones, and Jane McAllister for all their hard work over the past three years. Donna Rowley chair of the Looking to the Future committee thanked all 25 members who attended the council meeting in support of the proposed expansion to the Centre. She also men- tioned that the LTTF fund paid the architects fees for the plans. The plans were there for everyone to see. She asked for input from the members on the conceptual designs. This input can be passed on to anyone on the committee or to staff. Julie Conroy talked about the accomplishments of the Acton and Georgetown mem- bers work on the Strategic Plan. This included a New Look to Acton and George- town Centres newsletters, a joint seniors pamphlet, and working on a joint website linked through the Town of Halton Hills website. Bill Krever gave us an up- date on the 26 centres that participated in the Building Bridges survey that included surveys from 2,700 mem- bers and 700 non-members province-wide. Bill said it was certainly the largest seniors survey in Canada, and possible North Amer- ica, and was very important in shaping future plans for seniors in Ontario. Acton has one of the younger member- ships compared with the rest of the Province. It was inter- esting to see comments from non-members as to why they hadnt joined Centres in their areas, including Old people sitting playing cards, and eat- ing muffins. Little do they know there is a lot more go- ing on at our Centres. It was interesting to note that Acton members felt they got most of their information from local newspapers, and friends rather than the ad- vertising media, so we have to thank our local papers for that. Margaret Anderson and Donna Rowley conducted the election for three vacant board positions. They pre- sented three names; Pauline Barlow, Suzanne Blanchet- Haffey, and Wendy Muir. There were no nominations from the floor, so they were elected. Marg Haring tells me there were six players at Monday afternoons carpet bowling. Pat Galtons Black team beat Shirley Kruks Brown team 14 to 13. It was a very close game and everyone had fun. Anyone wishing to go to the Mohawk Dinner Theatre on Saturday, May 1, please sign-up and pay as soon as possible, as I have to con- firm numbers. If you ever went to the Dinner Theatre at Guelph Arboretum you will be happy to hear the show is produced by the same company, so I know it will be funny and well pro- duced. Of course the meals at the Mohawk Race track are always excellent. Last year we shared a bus with the Acton Legion and enjoyed a little taste of Brit- ish food and entertainment with a trip to the British Isles Show. This year George tells me they are hoping to go on Saturday, April 17. It should be around the same price as last year. Watch for the sign- up sheet. Ruth gave me the informa- tion for the last Rama trip. The 50/50 draw was won by Bill Brewer, the birthday prize by Shirley Loucks, and in the lucky seats were Gwen Pemberton, Ruth Burke, Eric Heptner, Kathy Bowman, Betty Campbell, and Peggy Naughton. Thinking of Ruth, she asked me to thank everyone who brought in wool for her and especially the lady who offered to knit pneu- monia vests. She said she has enough wool to keep the orphans warm for quite a while. Marj McDonough was the luck winner of this Fri- days 50/50. She won $63. For the past five weeks the money has been won every week. That must mean more people are coming in and putting their loonies in the box. NEW SENIORS BOARD: A new board of directors was elected last week to the Acton Seniors Centre. The executive includes, front from left: public re- lations committee chair Julie Conroy, president Mary Walsma, Wendy Muir, treasurer Pat Frizzell, travel committee chair Betty Green. Back: Halton Hills Council liaison Jon Hurst, Pauline Barlow, social committee chair Real Tetreault, secretary Connie Fix, past president Margaret Anderson and Susanne Blanchet-Haffey.
