Can- vassers will be going door-to-door, raising as much money as they can, to fight the deadly disease that an increasing number of people are all too fam- iliar with. Betty Storey, Canadian Cancer Society Chair for the Eramosa/Erin rural township is a champion for the cause. Almost be- yond belief, Storey has chaired the door-to-door fundraising campaign in her area for the past 35 years since 1975! Ive been expecting y o u , i s a c o m m o n statement made by the generous supporters in Ice makers thanked The 30-plus volunteers who spent many shivery cold nights making ice at five outdoor ice rinks in Guelph Eramosa Town- ship were honoured with certificates of apprecia- tion at last weeks council meeting. The community vol- unteers many of them youths were thanked for providing the rinks that Mayor Chris White called Canadian culture. White noted that the volun- teers persevered during a bumpy bureaucratic ride with the Townships insur- ance company, reportedly over daily rink mainten- ance report procedures. The volunteer groups apply to the Township to construct, maintain and in- spect the outdoor ice rinks, including ones in Eden Mills, Marden and three in Rockwood Lloyd Dyer, Max Storey and Valen- tino the last two in the subdivisions south of the village, on either side of Highway 7. In an effort to promote community spirit and a healthy lifestyle, the Township helps the vol- unteer ice rink makers with improvements/re- pairs to the lighting and water service within its means, by clearing snow, doing weekly safety in- spections and posting if the rink is open or closed as required. It also supplies each rink with hoses and nozzles, two shovels, two hockey nets, access to water, two benches, storage shed and a first aid kit. Brucedale speed limit reduced Brucedale residents will be happy that Township councillors agreed to their request to lower the speed limit for safety sake in the hamlet. Residents complained that recent construction on the Fifth Line caused the volume and speed of traffic to increase dra- matically, causing safety concerns for school chil- dren waiting for the bus in the area and for residents getting in and out of their driveways. At last weeks coun- cil meeting, a bylaw was passed to lower the speed to 50-km/hr from 80-km/ hr from the intersection of Fifth Line and Coun- ty Road 24, northward for 600-metres to the Brucedale hamlet limits. The new signs, mount- ing brackets and posts will cost $558, plus labour and equipment time. Feeder road speed limits Commuters using three Guelph Eramosa Town- ship rural roads as a back way to Guelph will have to slow down. Township Council, at the request of ratepayers who submitted three sep- arate petitions, voted to reduce the speed limits to 60km/hr from 80-km/hr on Fife Road from County Road 32 to the city limits, on Speedvale Avenue East from Jones Baseline to the city limits and on Watson Road from County Road 124 to the city limits. In a report to council, Ken Gagnon, manager of public works said the Township is in a unique situation as it surrounds a major urban centre on three sides, increasing the number of cars on some township roads. He said to decrease the risks to residents along the local feeder routes, the Township developed a policy for setting speed limits to 60-km/ hr on roads within two-kilometres of city boundaries. Storeys division who do- nated a whopping $10,900 in 2009. Twenty-three can- vassers visit as many as 300 rural homes in Erin/ Eramosa. When I take the total and divide it by the num- ber of homes visited, our average donation last year was $35 per household. However, many people cant afford to donate that much, but thats fine. One of our new canvassers was delighted last year when a man gave her a cheque in the amount of $500. He had recently completed successful treatment for the disease. He was more than happy to give back, Storey said. The campaign will start in earnest today Thurs- day, April 1. The longest serving canvasser in Stor- eys area is a woman who retired her duties in 2009 Ida Matthews. For 31 years since 1979 Mat- thews worked tirelessly raising funds in the annual effort to beat cancer. We believe that it can make a difference, Storey said. At the end of April, the 23 door-to-door can- vassers efforts will be applauded at a coffee party hosted by their lo- cal fund-raising organizer, Betty Storey. The Cancer Societys canvassing campaign in the village of Rockwood has its own Area Captain Mary Zaborowski who co-ordinates the routes for 35 volunteers. Last year was good. Our canvassers collected a total of $5,000 which was up from the previous year. We expect a steady climb in donations, year over year, Zaborow- ski said. She has been the Rock- wood areas canvassing captain for almost two decades. Zaborowski has 40 routes, with 35 cov- ered. She would be happy to hear from anyone will- ing to help with this years campaign. The most common financial dona- tion were likely to receive in Rockwood is $20 although some home- owners, who know that were coming, will hand over a cheque for $100. At almost every home we visit we hear a story from someone, who has been affected in one way or another, by this disease, Zaborowski said. Eramosa fights cancer ????????? ????? ? ???? ?????????? VERY COOL: Skaters at the outdoor ice rinks in Guelph/Eramosa Township are grateful for the efforts of local ice rink volunteers who were thanked at a recent Guelph/Eramosa Township meeting when Mayor Chris White congratulated six dedicated volunteers who clear outdoor skating rinks in the Township. Happy to re- ceive recognition were from the left: Matt Stiehl, George Kennedy, Rick Dopheide, Lisa Meecham, Danny Kelly and Ken Cornelisse. - Denise Paulson photo
