It was like opening Pan- doras Box when the Monday morning craft group opened the huge box of wool and partly finished knitted items at the Acton Seniors Cen- tre last Monday. They were very generous and donated some of the wool to Ruth for her knitting for overseas, and are going to work on the challenge of finishing some of the items, even though there were no patterns. Our Craft ladies are very talented and enjoy a challenge. I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter holiday with friends and family, the weather certainly was a bonus. Now Spring is here our thoughts turn to our gar- dens. After many years of keeping our garden at our entrance colourful and at- tractive, June Fraser has decided to take a well earned break. We were hoping some avid garden- er will enjoy the challenge of keeping our small front garden attractive with sea- sonal plantings. If you are interested, please leave your name at the front desk for Wendy Krever. Almost 50 Acton Sen- iors Centres volunteers attended the mandatory one-hour talk on providing quality service for custom- ers with disabilities, with Laura Lancaster, a Human Resource Advisor for the Town of Halton Hills. We learned about the Towns policies in regard to serving people with dis- abilities. She guided us through the more positive ways of approaching people with both visual and hidden disabilities, so we could provide them with the best service possible at our Seniors Centre. Everyone gained knowledge of how to approach people, but the most important things were patience, a friendly smile and common sense. I saw Dave and Margaret Dodgson this week at the Centre. They have been two very dedicated members who put in many volunteer hours over the years. Sev- eral years ago they created the wonderful social din- ners that we all enjoyed. Margaret enjoyed Paper Tole and was instrumen- tal in starting the classes at the Centre. She was also on the Board as Membership chair and Social chair, and Dave was President for sev- eral years, stepping into the shoes of Arlene Bruce when she was unable to continue. He has been co-chair of the Looking to the Future committee. We wish them well in their new home in Tilsonburg. Our loss is Tilsonburgs gain. The people who signed up for the Monday, June 21 trip to the races and buffet dinner, please pay as soon as possible as we have to send a cheque to confirm numbers shortly. We have over 40 people signed up so far. There is still room to get your ticket for the British Isles Show. If you are in- terested please check at the front desk. Calling all golfers! The Annual OACAO Golden Horseshoe Region golf tournament will be held on Friday, June 25 at Oak Gables Golf Club, south of Hamilton. The price in- cludes golf, cart, lunch and prizes. I have been for the past two years, and it is fun. If you are interested please let Wendy know. At Rama last Wednesday, Peggy Naughton won the 50/50. The birthday prizes were won by Joan Hayes and Iren Zililpovic, and in the luck seats were Fran Lore, Joan Collacci, Ethel McEchern, Wilma Cham- pion, Adele Lavesque, and Harry Van der Heyden. Although the weather was beautiful, it didnt keep the Thursday morning card players home. There were five tables playing, and they obviously were having a good time by the chatter and laughter. At Thursday afternoons Bid Euchre, Elma Braida had the only mooner. The weekly 50/50 draw was made on Thursday afternoon, but the name drawn had not put their loonie in the box, so next week the total should be over $400. The federal government has suspended the Eco- Energy Retrofit Homes Program that was to be available until March 2011. Ottawa announced last week it would no longer accept applications to book pre-retrofit evalua- tions after March 31. This means that anyone who has not already booked an evaluation is no longer eligible for a rebate. The program provided homeowners with incen- tives to have their homes evaluated for energy effi- ciency, and then perform upgrades to improve their rating. Were disappointed by this decision, said Steve Koch, Executive Director of NAIMA Canada. This was a wonderful program that did exactly what it was supposed to do and more. It was one of the govern- ments most impactful programs to deal with cli- mate change and energy efficiency. Homeowners were re- warded for making their homes more energy ef- ficient, and hundreds of green jobs were created. Provincial governments have been matching Ot- tawas incentives with their own retrofit programs, and developing mandatory labelling to help educate and motivate consumers to develop an energy effi- cient home. We now have to look to Premiers like Dalton McGuinty to enact the mandatory labelling in or- der to support the auditors and the industry. Eco-Energy cancelled DISABILITY TRAINING: Laura Lancaster is Hu- man Resources Advisor for the Town of Halton Hills. She ran a one hour information workshop for all Acton Seniors volunteers at the Centre last week. It helped us appreciate the towns policies regarding people with visible and non visible disabilities and how it affects our Centre. Julie Conroy photo
