Acton High students earn multiple medals at Skills Olympics The annual Acton Skills Olympics allows students to showcase their knowledge of specific areas of study and promote careers in skilled trades and technologies. The competitions improve the expertise and confidence of students and provide them with real world experience. The competitions and results are as follows: The Architectural CADD competition required stu- dents to demonstrate their knowledge of architectural design and computer aided drafting. The challenge re- quired students to redesign a structure that had burned down and then add a separate apartment in the lower level. Competitors produce CADD floor plans, front elevation, cross section, 3d model, and site plan. Gold Medal - Travis Kayler Silver Medal - Dylan Jubinville Bronze Medal - Jonathan Van Oosten The Mechanical CADD competition required stu- dents to demonstrate their knowledge of mechanical design and computer aided drafting. The challenge re- quired students to create 3d CADD models of a series of machine parts from design sketches and then create a rendered virtual assembly of the finished mechanism. Gold Medal - Gillian Motluk The Automotive Techni- cian competition required students to demonstrate their knowledge by completing the following. Measure a brake rotor and look up specifi- cations, measure electrical values, inspect brakes and list faults, fabricate a brake line, scan tool usage, identify automotive components and their use, re and re a timing belt and a written multiple choice test. Gold Medal - Zach Botelho Silver Medal - Shawn Fife Bronze Medal - Ryan Shepherd - Derek Dercatch The Automotive Techni- cian competition grade 10 required students to dem- onstrate their knowledge by completing the following. Rebuild a small engine pull start, change oil on a small engine, torque a fastener properly, gap a spark plug and identify hand tools. Gold Medal - Adam Kayler Silver Medal - Dylan Bickers Bronze Medal - Jesse Squires In Construction Tech- nology - Team Carpentry competitors were given a set of plans to construct a picnic table. Judging criter- ia consisted of: Teamwork, Accuracy of Measurements, Safety Practices, and Stage of Completion. Gold Medal - Peter Donohoe & Kevin Wall Silver Medal - Nick Egan & Jake Lewis Bronze Medal - Dylan Ramsay & Mitchell Webster In Construction Tech- nology - Cabinet Making competitors were required to complete an early Amer- ican Wall Shelf. They made the project out of rough cut lumber which needed to be dressed to specific dimen- sions. Accurate Joinery and Quality of Construction were two areas of judging. Gold Medal - Dustin Hedley Silver Medal - Cam Gies Bronze Medal - Hasan Rajabali In Communications Tech- nology - Teams of 2 Video Production students were required to demonstrate their knowledge of Video Production. The challenge required students to pre-plan, videotape edit and export an original music video within 4 hours. Gold Medal - Jason Field and Dylan Laidlaw Silver Medal - Andrei Letavin and Eric St. Pierre In Communications Tech- nology - Digital Photography students were required to demonstrate their knowledge of Digital Photography. The challenge required students to capture the essence of the Acton Skills Competitions with a series of five photo- graphs. These photographs were then taken into Photo- shop to edit and export. The photographs in this article are their fantastic work. Ironically the pho- tographers did not take any photographs of each other. Gold Medal - Julia Seiler Silver Medal - Katie Brennan Bronze Medal - Cori Fraser I n C o m m u n i c a t i o n s Technology - Teams of 2 Animation students were re- quired to demonstrate their knowledge of the Animation Process. The challenge re- quired students to pre-plan, create, edit and export an ori- ginal 30 second to 2 minute Animation within 4 hours. Gold Medal - Cody Tomotsugu and Colin Brennan Silver Medal - Kevin McNally and Luke Shore The Fashion Arts Com- petition required students to demonstrate their know- ledge by sewing a pair of pyjama pants from a pattern. The challenge also included changing or altering the pat- tern in some way that made their pyjama pants unique. Gold Medal - Amanda Parker Silver Medal - Amanda Popp Bronze Medal - Mychaila Sutherland The Gold medal win- ners, and some of the Silver metal winners, competed in the Halton District School Boards 23rd annual Halton Skills Competition at Rob- ert Bateman High School in Burlington. Approximately 650 ele- mentary and secondary students from across Halton will compete in a wide range of skills. Teams of elemen- tary students in Grades 4-8 will take part in activities like Technology Challenge, Distance Challenge, Lego Robotics, Animation and TV Video competitions. Secondary school students will compete in numerous events including technical skills, architectural computer- assisted design, auto collision repair, auto service, auto painting, baking, cabinet making, carpentry, charac- ter animation, culinary arts, desktop publishing, digital photography, electrical wir- ing, floristry, graphic design, hairstyling, home building, landscape gardening, mech- anical computer-assisted design, precision machining, welding, small power equip- ment, TV/video production and apparel design. Career Showcase took place during the day with representatives from industry and education. There were demonstrations, interactive activities and displays at the competition. Students successful in the competition will go forward to represent the Halton Dis- trict School Board at the Ontario Skills Competition in Waterloo from May 17-19, and then onto the Canadian Skills Competition in Wat- erloo from May 20-23. SKILLS OLYMPIANS: There were multiple medal winners at the recent Skills Olympics at Acton High School an annual event to showcase the technical talents of students. - Submitted photo
