Submitted photo Province Halts Quarry in Hamilton Following Halton Objections The province of Ontario has barred development of a proposed quarry in Hamilton, just west of the Halton Region and Town of Milton border, after considering resolutions passed at both Halton Region and City of Ham- ilton Council meetings. Last year, St. Marys Cement Group proposed a new quarry located north-west of the inter- section of Concession 11 and Milburough Line in Hamilton. After a series of public consultations, Halton Regional Council and the Chief Medical Officer of Health passed a resolution stating the quarry would cause po- ten t ia l g roundwater contamination, damage to natural features and negatively affect traffic patterns. I am very pleased that the Provincial gov- ernment has heard our concerns and those of our residents and has there- Province listens to Region To The Editor, Volunteers --the heart of a school Lifes most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others? Martin Luther King, Jr. On Tuesday, the staff and administration at McKenzie- Smith Bennett Public School will host a Volunteer Appre- ciation Breakfast at the school as a way to thank the many volunteers that have selflessly helped our children. It truly takes a village to raise a child and their efforts go a long way to make this happen. On any given day you will find helpers reading to students, sorting books, or- ganizing materials, planning events, tending gardens, attending field trips and meet- ings, or serving up a warm delicious breakfast. They work early in the morning, late at night or find time dur- ing the day to help our staff and school administration make MSB a great place to be. They give a few hours or many. They do this to help our future citizens be in a posi- tive, caring, safe environment where they can learn, grown and succeed. National Volunteer Week reminds us all to say thank you to those who contribute hundreds of hours of service for our community. They are truly an inspiration for our children and for each of us. Thanks to all the volun- teers at MSB for making it a great place to be and doing so much for others. You are all MSB Stars! Melissa Secord MSB School Council Chair MSB thanks its volunteers Gord Miller, Ontarios Environment Commis- sioner wants to learn more about the barriers and incentives youve experi- enced when conserving energy in Ontario. Hes created a new website at www.ontarioenergy- c o n s e r v a t i o n . c a f o r Ontarians to report their pleasure or frustration with energy conservation initiatives. The Green Energy and Green Economy Act, passed in spring 2009, mandates the ECO to pro- duce an annual report on progress of activities in Ontario to reduce the use or make more efficient use of electricity, natural gas, propane, oil and transpor- tation fuels. This includes: Describing results of in- itiatives to reduce or make more efficient use of the prescribed fuels Describing progress in meeting government-es- tablished targets for the prescribed fuels Identifying barriers to implementation of con- servation and efficiency of the prescribed fuels, including those found in Ontario, federal and municipal legislation, regulations and policies, as well as local by-laws In order to access the experiences and opinions of the broadest range of Ontarians, we now have simple to use forms on our website, and we welcome input from everyone about their stories and experi- ences, both good and bad related to conserving ener- gy, Miller commented. Stories can be submitted at www.ontarioenergy- conservation.ca Do you have an energy issue? The public has 45 days to comment on Dufferin Aggregates plans to ex- pand its Acton limestone quarry - a 45-day notifi- cation and consultation period began on Monday and ends on June 18. Dufferin has applied to expand the area it can quarry by 300-hectares, but only 100-hectares would be mined and the balance would be donat- ed to public ownership. This is just the next stage in what is a long process, said Andrea Bourrie, Dufferins Dir- ector of Planning and Regulatory Affairs, on Monday. It is a really import- ant phase because it is an opportunity for the public to formally comment on the proposal that we have put forward and we want to make sure that people take this opportunity to make their comments under the Aggregates Re- sources Act. She said without the extension there is six or seven years worth of rock left in the existing quarry, depending on market conditions. With the ex- pansion, there would be a 20 to 25 year supply (of rock), Bourrie said. Dufferin is approved to extract four million tonnes of material per year. The Acton quarry had been operating since 1962 and the latest approvals were in 1973. Dufferin will host a public infor- mation session on June 2 at Acton High School. For more information call 1-866-635-6111 or visit www.dufferinacton- quarry.com Dufferin wants public comments fore taken appropriate action, said Gary Carr, Halton Regional Chair. By working together with our communities and residents, we can af- fect change. For more information, please visit the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing at www.mah. gov.on.ca.
