A school in Para- guay. Better food and a better life for children in Peru, Ghana and Namibia. These are just a few things that grew from small seedlings planted by our Scouts, in the unique an- nual spring environmental fundraiser now taking place across Canada. Our kids learn first hand how to plant and maintain trees and how they can have a power- ful impact on creating a healthy environment. Of course, trees provide a re- newable source of clean air and a natural wildlife habitat; so in a very real way, the Scoutrees pro- gram is a gift to Canadas outdoors. Some of the funds raised from the Scoutrees program go towards the Scout Brotherhood Fund, which provides assistance to developing countries. In many cases our own Canadian Scouting youth travel overseas to help build community infra- structures with their own hands. This is their gift to the world. This year, Acton Bea- vers, Cubs and Scouts will be planting Scoutrees on April 17 at the Acton Dufferin Quarry site from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. This will be the 10th year that the Dufferin Quarry Ac- ton has hosted Scoutree planting in conjunction with Dufferins Earth Day celebrations. Scouts plant trees Federal cash to improve parking Michael Chong, MP for Welling- tonHalton Hills, has announced an investment of $825,000 to attract more people to the historic commercial dis- tricts of Acton and Georgetown. In Acton, this funding will be used to upgrade the parking lot on Mill Street beside Trinity United church. In George- town, the funding will be used to build a new 75-space parking lot on Edith Street and upgrade the parking lots on Draper and Back Streets. These funds are part of Canadas Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canadas plan to help the Canadian economy through this global recession. These investments will not only help create local jobs in Acton and George- town, they will also help revitalize the historic commercial districts of these two vibrant communities. said Michael Chong. The Town worked closely with the Acton and Georgetown BIAs on this funding application and we are very pleased that this funding application has been approved, said Mayor Bon- nette. These two projects support over 200 businesses in the Town of Halton Hills, the Towns Shop Local program and the goals of both Acton and George- town BIAs. The upgrades to parking are very important for the vibrancy of any downtown area. The improvements to downtown Ac- ton and Georgetown are to begin shortly and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. This project will be funded through the Community Adjustment Fund, part of Canadas Economic Action Plan, an un- precedented two-year national program aimed at addressing the short-term eco- nomic needs of communities hit hardest by the global economic recession. The approved project must meet the terms and conditions set out in the con- tribution agreement. For additional information on Canadas Economic Ac- tion Plan, visit www.actionplan.gc.ca.
