The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS), located at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton. Compost will be available for Halton residents as a result of their success in diverting over 33,000 tonnes of yard waste from the landfill last year, said Haltons Regional Chair, Gary Carr. The rich, garden-friendly compost has been produced from all of the leaves, brush and other yard waste material residents have set out for col- lection in the Regions yard waste pro- gram and from these materials dropped off at the HWMS. During the 2009 Spring Compost Give Away event, 5,000 residents came to the Halton Waste Management Site and picked up approximately 1,500 tonnes of compost. Halton residents also dropped off seven tonnes of food and a record $12,172, which was do- nated to local food banks throughout Halton. Residents attending this years Spring Compost Give Away are once again encouraged to bring a cash dona- tion or a non-perishable food item. More than 1,500 tonnes of pro- cessed compost will be available to residents this spring. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven per household) and a shovel in order to pick up their com- post. For best growing results, compost must be mixed together with topsoil or another gardening fi ll. A 60/40 split (60 per cent topsoil and 40 per cent compost) is recommended.
