Actons Emily Dimytosh, a graduate of Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown, is one of five Halton students to receive a $1,000 Halton Environ- mental Scholarship Award. The awards ceremony was Tuesday in Burlington, but Dimytosh was unable to attend the Halton Region- al Chairs Breakfast on the Environment. Along with the five scholarships, 13 young people and student clubs received Environmental Excellence Awards. The Halton Regional Chairs Environmental Awards are all about in- spiring Haltons youth to protect and preserve the environment, said Halton Chair Gary Carr. I would like to congratulate all the award winners every year Im so impressed by the level of commitment and enthusiasm Halton students show towards protecting the environment in their schools and com- munities. The Halton Environ- mental Scholarship Awards were open to youth who are, or will be, pursuing post-secondary studies with an emphasis on the environment. T h e H a l t o n Yo u t h Awards for Environment- al Excellence were open to all Halton elementary and secondary students, as well as grass roots or- ganizations, and provided an opportunity to win $500 for their school or organization. Local win- ners include the Youth Caucus from P.O.W.E.R. (Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources, Georgetown, sponsored by Wastewise, the Eco Coun- cil from Brookville Public School (Campbellville), sponsored by Anthrafil- ter Media and Coal Ltd., and The Green Club from Christ the King, sponsored by TransCanadaEnergy. This years Breakfast on the Environment featured keynote speaker Spencer West who, ironically, filled in for scheduled keynote speaker, Craig Kielburger, who was trapped in the United Kingdom because of flight cancellations due to volcanic ash from Ice- land. West urged youth to be- come community leaders offering concrete actions to find personal strength and believe in themselves as active change-makers. In order to plan for the Extended Care Program, the Halton District School Board mailed ELP registered parents a letter and registration form on April 7. Completed forms must be returned, with the security deposit, no later than tomor- row (Friday, April 23). Based on the information gathered on the completed registration forms, the School Board will determine by Friday May 14 if and where the Extended Day Program will be offered.
