Council approved the Fire Services and Emergency Plan Committee recommendation at its December meeting. Originally, a geothermal system was only planned for the new headquarters building planned on the corner of Eighth Line and 10 Sideroad. A second station will be built behind the old Maple Ave. station. This is a result of a partnership with SouthWestern Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Halton Hills Hydro Inc., who will provide a loan to the Town to pay for the $653,197 system. It makes it possible for this type of heating and cooling system to be included in the two new fire halls with very little of the financial dis- tress that was going to occur when we were going to finance it through the capital budget, said Fire Services and Emergency Plan commit- tee chair, Ward 3 Councillor Moya Johnson. The Town will make annual payments of $27,000 (including interest) to SWE for 20 years, plus a downpayment of $24,380. The Region will pay their share ($4,221 and $3,806) respectively) to fund the ambulance hall portion of the building. The annual payments will be incorporated into the Fire Services annual operating bud- get but due to the expected reduction of $14,300 in heating costs, the net amount will be $12,730. Its exciting that we can move forward with both fire halls having the geothermal system and so for the life of those buildings, which is expected to be 50 or 60 years, there will be no emissions, or fossil fuels used to heat or cool those buildings, said Johnson. A geothermal system works on the premise that the earth below the frost line (about four feet deep) is a constant temperature all year. Heat is taken from the ground and transferred to the air during the winter and in summer the process is reversed. Town to partner with Hydro Inc. on heating system for fire stations CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Another $25,000 was added to the Towns 2008 capital budget at councils December meeting to fund a Transportation Study for Glen Williams. Ward 2 Councillor Joan Robson introduced the motion to include the funding that will be drawn from the Capital Financing Reserve Fund. Robson said this study had been intended to be done since the completion of the Glen Williams Secondary Plan, but to date it had remained unfunded. Somehow it fell though the cracks, said Robson, and considering the considerable growth that the community is faced with, the 91 homes coming on stream and then after that Summertree Two and Bayfield Homes, the pressures are great.
