Acton/Georgetown, Friday, January 4, 2008 9 Georgetown Dial a Bottle 905-873-4565 www.ipikup4u.com The Town of Halton Hills has begun steps to designate the Glen Williams Town Hall as a historically significant property. Council approved the Heritage Halton Hills (HHH) committee rec- ommendation to proceed to desig- nate the building under Section 4 of the Ontario Heritage Act. According to a report prepared by HHH chair Mark Rowe, the 1871 building has design, historical and cultural value. It owes its creation to alcohol and its bad effects, said Rowe, with tongue in cheek. It was built as a Temperance Hall and turned into a community hall and it has been used for everything you could possibly think of using a hall for including churches and schools over its histo- ry. The colonial Cape Code style hall is an excellent example of hand- pressed red clay brick that was made just north of the village. The bricks are laid in a Flemish bond pattern. The windows and doors are all origi- nal. Georgetown builder Walter McKay built the Prince St. structure, which has served as the centre of the village for the past 137 years. It opened with a concert on Queen Victorias birthday, May 24. When Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery lived in Norval, she staged many plays at the hall. The current owner of the property is the board of nine trustees of the Glen Williams Town Hall, a group of volunteers who maintain the hall and sponsor village events such as the Canada Day in the Glen. Only the halls exterior will be eli- gible for designation as the interior was gutted and renovated in the mid-70s. I just want this to happen. I real- ly love that hall, said Ward 2 Councillor Joan Robson, and long- time Glen resident. I have spent a great deal of time in it and still do. It hosts volunteers from a very vibrant community and we would really like to see it designated so it goes on as a part of our history in that village. Ward 4 Councillor Bob Inglis directed Town staff to monitor traffic speeds and sightlines at the Oak St. and Argyll Rd. intersection and report back to council in the short term. While the ward councillors (Inglis and John Duncan) have reviewed the issue with the Towns traffic analysts, Inglis said, to date staff have not issued any recommendations.
