Club members Madison Kelly and Haleigh Rees, along with coach Tracey Paculan, will take part in the 24th-annual Skate Canada competi- tions. Winterfest 2008 is expected to attract 89 synchronized skating teams from across North America from the youth to adult levels. In recent competitions, Kelly placed fifth at the Bill Phillips Synchronized competition with the Skate Canada Brampton-Ching- uacousy Gold Ice Novice Festival Team, while Rees earned a bronze medal at the Dr. Richard Porter Synchronized Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also picked up a gold medal in Quebec, beating the 2007 Canadian Champions Les Supremes at the St. Hubert Synchronized Skating competition with the Gold Ice novices. Kelly and Rees will hit the ice for the 2008 Canadian Synchronized Skating Championships in Chilliwack, B.C. Feb. 28 to March 2. Kelly and Haleigh Rees, along with Bethany Rees, are currently the 2007 Provincial Synchronized Skating Champions after represent- ing the Gold Ice in the Juvenile cate- gory in North Bay last season. Georgetown skaters in 2008 Winterfest Top Dogs Matt Velten (left) and J.J. Laforet were among the major award recipients last week when the Halton Hills Jr. B Bulldogs held their awards banquet to cap off one of the clubs most suc- cessful seasons. Velten, the outgoing captain, received the Bulldog of the Year trophy and was one of five graduating players recognized for his three years of service to the team. Laforet earned both the regular season MVP and rookie-of-the-year honours, leading the Bulldogs with 25 points in 11 playoff games during their run to the OLA East Conference finals against Clarington. Other award winners for the Dogs included: Adam Holton Memorial Award (Unsung Hero) Greg Henry; Regular season leading scorer Nic Grasby; Best Defensive Player goalie Manny Hundal; Most Sportsmanlike Player Reed Board; Most Improved Player Mike Brown and the team was named Playoff MVP winner.
