Dr. Naiema Fiel is currently seeing patients at her temporary office located in Georgetown Hospitals obstetrics unit until she can find permanent space in town. Shes been looking for six months, but so far had no luck finding a location, that needs to be close to the hospital. Fiel, originally from Libya where she was trained and practised gen- eral surgery, graduated from the University of Western Ontarios obstetrics and gynecology five-year residency program last year. Prior to beginning that program she com- pleted two years in general pathology, also at Western, before making the switch to obstet- rics/gynecology, a specialty she is really enjoying. To bring someone into the world its amazing. You cant imagine how good it is, said Fiel, who has privileges at the hospital, and before opening her practice in town worked with obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Glen Hunter at Milton Hospital. Fiel is enjoying working in Georgetown. I l ike to work to help people where theres a shortage, she said. Im happy because they (the women of the area) have choices. With the addition of Fiel to the communi- ty, area women now have two obstetrician/gynecologists to choose from herself and Dr. Selvara Gunaratnam. Fiel offers prenatal care, pre-conceptual and antepartum counselling as well as a wide range of obstetrical and gynecological surgery, including laparoscopic and open procedures. In addition, she offers infertility work-up and manage- ment, urinary incontinence diagnos- tics and surgery, colposcopy (for abnormal pap tests), contraceptive and sexuality-related counselling. Fiel lives in Georgetown with her husband Dr. A. Benmusa, a cardiac surgeon at McMaster Hospital and their two sons Ahmed, 11, and Malek, 7. She said her husband has been extremely supportive of her and her career aspirations. You cant imagine how much hes supported me, said Fiel. She said she noticed a difference between training for doctors in Canada and Libya and enjoyed her training at Western. We (Libyan-trained medical students) have a lot of knowledge. Here its more clini- cal. Its more expression of what you under- stand. Medicine is a popular career choice in Fiels family. She has two nephews and two nieces who are doctors and another nephew in medical school. Fiel is currently seeing obstetrics and gynecology patients by referral from a family physician. She can be reached at 905-873- 0111 ext. 8202. Libyan-trained obstetrician opens Georgetown practice LISA TALLYN Staff Writer DR. NAIEMA FIEL
