FOR EMERGENCIES FIRE/POLICE/AMBULANCE: DIAL 9-1-1 14 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, February 13, 2008 11 The Region is asking the Province to give it, and all other Ontario municipalities, a tax break. At its meeting last Wednesday, regional council passed a motion that calls on those at Queens Park to fully exempt municipalities from paying PST, with the under- standing that the savings would fund infrastructure requirements. If the Province was to grant this wish, it would mean about $2 million would be freed up in Haltons coffers each year. Halton Hills Council lor Clark Somervil le and Burlington councillors John Taylor and Peter Thoem all spoke out in favour of the motion. Theres something absurd about one level of govern- ment levying tax on another, Thoem noted. The Canadian government has already exempted all municipalities from paying GST. The motion was put forward in support of a similar resolution recently passed by the City of Waterloo. It will now be forwarded to both the provincial and federal governments, Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Federation of Canadian Municipalities and all Halton-area MPs and MPPs for consideration and appro- priate action. Sign left crippled Georgetown resident and Independent & Free Press reader John Vandermeer sent us this amusing photo of a street sign left slightly handicapped after a snow- plow passed by on Trafalgar Road last week. If you have an interesting or unusual photo youd like to share e- mail it to jmcghie@indepen- dentfreepress.com with as much detail about the photo as possible. Please include a daytime phone number and the name of the photog- rapher. Photo by John Vandermeer Region urges Province to exempt municipalities from paying PST
