Groundhogs all over the world could not agree on the question Six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Im going along with Wiarton Willie and look for- ward to an early spring. Are you aware of what the term identity theft means? Do you think you are safe and it could never happen to you? Perhaps you should reconsider your answer to the second ques- tion. Recently, Halton Police Constable Jackie Brennan and other members of the S.A.L.T. team gave a presentation to about 40 seniors at the Georgetown Seniors Centre. The topic dealt with the many, many ways we can protect our personal informa- tion from those in the business of stealing it. Dont make it easy for thieves to catch you. Once stolen, it takes a long, long time to get your identity back. Guard it carefully. February 14 (tomorrow) and the Georgetown Seniors Centre AGM is approaching. This is the meeting of the year and your opportunity to take part in the operation of your Centre and how we can make it grow in the future. There is still time to get your name on the ballot to become one of the six board mem- bers. Nominations from the floor will also be taken the day of the AGM. The AGM will follow the luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased at the Reception Desk. If you choose to come to the meeting only, you should plan to be at the Centre by 1 p.m. Have you circled March 8 on your calendar? That is the date for our big fundraiser dinner and dance. Bruce Cunnington will serve a roast beef dinner, with all the trimmings. Dancing will follow to the music of the Seniors Band. Martha tells me there are door prizes, draws and loads and loads of FUN. Tickets for this dinner/dance are available from the Band members or at the Reception Desk. A limited number will be sold. Get your ticket early! Dont get left out in the March winds! Come out the Georgetown Seniors Centre! Get involved! Make new friends! Share in a cup of coffee or tea. See you there! FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre Meeting of the year to be held tomorrow We had another snow day at the Centre, closing last Thursday, so there was no card playing that day. When we close the Centre the decision is made early by Margaret Anderson, our presi- dent. A message is put on the tele- phone answering service, so if you are in doubt call the Centre before leaving home. You see you dont have to go away to enjoy winter, you can do it right here in Acton. Join the Centre and find out the many ways we have of making time pass quickly. Dont forget to pick up your newsletter at the Front Desk when you come in; there is lots of information for the upcoming months. Six carpet bowlers were cheered on by Mary Walsma last Monday, but her encouragement couldnt help Ivans Black team as they lost 29-6 to Neviss Brown team, who were missing Peggys expertise. Have you got your tickets for the Undertakers Ball on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Acton Legion? We have tickets at the Centre and any ticket purchased from us we receive $5 for the Centre. The evening promises to be a lot of fun with dancing and entertainment. Dont forget the Centre will be closed this coming Monday, Feb. 18, for the new Family Day holiday. Take the time to be in touch with or spend time with your family. The Annual General Meeting will soon be here and we are still in need of a Secretary to replace Eileen. Anyone who can write, type letters and take minutes at the Board meetings can do this work, and Eileen has said that she will guide the person along. Please call Gerald Rennie at 519-853-0646 if you think you would be interested in this position. Please make a point of attending the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Centre. There is a lot of information to be heard and lots of people to meet, so come out, cast your vote for the Board of Directors for the coming year, and enjoy the refreshments. The 50/50 draw last week was drawn on Monday as the Centre was closed on Friday, due to the weather. The person whose name was drawn had not put their loonie in! (I wonder who that was Julie!) Betty Lockerbie was the lucky win- ner of this weeks 50/50 drawcon- gratulations Betty! Betty Green said there are still lots of seats to be filled for the February 20 trip to see Beauty and the Beast at Stage West. If you are interested put your name on the sign-up sheet before it is too late. I have just returned, with my fellow hikers, from a pleasant hour-long hike through knee-deep snow at Scotsdale Farm. It was fun to trailblaze our way through the beautiful fresh white snow and then enjoy our well-earned coffee at Tim Hortons. Last Monday evening 30 members enjoyed a delicious meal, listened and sang along to Peter Baumanns accordian playing, and some even got up to dance. We were all shocked and saddened last week to hear of the sudden death of our dear friend and member Bob Patterson. Our sincere condolences go out to Pat and their family. Bob will be sadly missed at the Centre, where he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. Another past member, Bill Sikora passed away last week. Bill, who was 97, had not been an active member for the past couple of years, but he did enjoy playing cribbage when he was able. Our condolences to his family. The next monthly Euchre will be on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Januarys trip to Casino Rama had these winners: Stephanie Westaway won the 50/50, Birthdays were Claude Couture, Elmer Dunn, Helen Hore and Bill Brewer, and the lucky seats were Mary VanderSanden, Ruth Burke and Mr. George. There was no mention of any big winners at the Casino! It is coming up to Income Tax time again, but the Centre will not be hold- ing the clinics they have for the past few years. Any senior needing help with their income tax should call Links2Care at 519-853-3310 and speak to Cathy or Lynn. Tomorrow (Thursday) is Valentines Day so remember we are never too old for a little love and romance in our lives. Is this love? A senior citizen said to his 80-year-old buddy, I hear you are getting married. Yes, he replied. His friend asked Is she good looking, is she a good cook, doe she have lots of money? He answered No to all these. Then why are you marrying her? He answered, Because she can still drive! EILEEN DIX Acton Seniors Centre Acton Seniors snowed under with activities
